  • San Diego Craft Collective welcomes Ashley Lohr, a special guest artist and educator from Southeast Alaska! In this workshop, students will be introduced to the art of powder enamel and learn the skills to create 1-pair of torch-fired enamel earrings. Students will be using lead-free Thompson enamel on copper metal. Enamel is a glassy compound applied to and bonded by heat (fusion) to a metal surface. We will be using a handheld butane torch as our heat source. Learn how to prep, sift enamel, clean fire scale, and fire with a handheld butane torch. * Students will have their own enameling station/ will not be sharing materials. * Choose from a variety of copper metal shapes to enamel on. * Work with 11 Thompson powder enamel colors to choose your palette. * Use stencils, sgraffito tools, and frit to create your own unique designs. * All jewelry created will be ready to wear at the end of the workshop. This workshop is for beginners and for those who’d like a refresher. All materials to create 1 pair of earrings. Masks and safety goggles will be provided. This class is appropriate for ages 16 years and older.   • Learn to Carve a Decorative Spoon! In this 5-hour workshop, students will learn to carve a decorative spoon in basswood in the European carving tradition. Students will learn and apply the following skills that are needed to carve a simple decorative spoon: -Carving safety -Honing/sharpening -Tracing and transfer of the spoon layout to a piece of basswood -Hollowing out the spoon; carving the back; and removing thickness under the handle -Carving out the handle -Sanding the spoon and handle -Finish can be applied at home (instructor can offer shellac, which is non-toxic) This class is designed for the beginner as well as more experienced carvers. Different techniques and styles make it interesting for all skill levels. There is no prerequisite for this class. All of the necessary tools and materials will be available to students for this class. It is recommended that you bring your own safety gear (eye protection, hearing protection, dust mask, gloves). We have hearing and eye protection available if you do not have your own. No experience necessary. In this one-day workshop, students will learn about the properties of wood and how different wood species need to be approached when sanding and finishing. We will cover shop safety and how to use various machines such as the bandsaw, spindle sander, edge sander, and drill press. The skills learned in this course will allow you to elevate your future projects by adding curves and texture. We will build upon machine knowledge and cover wood shaping using various hand tools such as rasps, files, spokeshaves, hand planes, chisels, and gouges.
