Resembling dioramas, they are made from common household objects and craft material and traditionally combine elements from mestizo spirituality, and popular culture. The INSITE LAB is a roving platform for artists on both sides of the border (San Diego, US-Baja California, MX) designed to instigate conversations and experiences around process and research in art making. The LAB offers an innovative framework outside of academia where artists engage with specialists from a variety of disciplines and reimagine the region as a laboratory for research. Jeanne Dunn's bold colors and semi-realistic forms take their cue from the idea of immersion in one’s sensations and individual experiences of an arboreal place. There’s a term for this in Japanese, where engaging in shinrin-yoku, or literally a “forest-bath,” is a time-honored practice of walking in the woods for its benefits to the mind and body. Her intention is to subvert common assumptions about Nature and to celebrate its agency and omnipresence. The exhibition continues through October 5, 2024.
