On Friday, Dec. 5, Songwriter Sanctuary will ring in the holidays with a season closer featuring original music from some of San Diego’s folkiest and funniest troubadours. Don your gay apparel and join Cara Cormier, Peggy Watson and Dave Beldock, and JT Moring as they swap songs and stories in a Nashville-style round. The event is hosted by the legendary Jeff Berkley in partnership with Normal Heights United. (4650 Mansfield St. Suggested Donation $10. All ages. Doors 6:30 p.m., Music 7 p.m.) All donations collected go directly to artists, and no one is turned away for lack of funds. (No frozen items please.) About the Artists Cara Cormier flings lyrical spaghetti into the universe to keep herself sane, help people laugh, and create a more just and compassionate society. Drawing from her rural Kansas Mennonite upbringing, Cara uses her love of folk and Americana styles to craft cheeky, heartfelt story-songs using acoustic guitar, harmonica, mandolin, banjo, and spoons. From hysterical dating accounts to mischievous protest songs to tender confessionals, Cara writes the songs you never expected to hear. David Beldock and Peggy Watson started their collaboration as unlikely music partners. While David spent years performing with various bands, honing his rock and blues guitar playing, Peggy was rooted in contemporary folk traditions with occasional detours into jazz and pop. But when they joined forces, they discovered that writing songs together was a fun challenge that they couldn’t resist. The result has been a collection of melodic, thoughtful, funny, and emotional songs that appeal to a wide range of listeners. Their styles span everything from folk to jazz to blues to show tunes. JT Moring is a dynamic entertainer known for incisive songs/stories and audience engagement. He performs solo on guitar or banjo, and in collaboration with a collection of San Diego County’s top musicians. 2024 was a year of recording, performances with Storytellers of San Diego (where they let me sing as long as I tell a story to go with it!), house concerts, backyard parties, Adams Avenue Unplugged, and recording and releasing a new album LINES. On Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2025, One Warm Coat will lead the nation in observing National Share the Warmth Day, a dedicated national day of awareness and action to ensure everyone has access to the warmth, comfort, and protection they need to thrive. Since 1992, One Warm Coat has helped distribute nearly 9 million coats and kept 22 million pounds of textiles out of landfills. Every coat collected stays within the local community where it was given, ensuring immediate impact. Observed annually on the third Tuesday of October, National Share the Warmth Day inspires thousands of individuals, schools, community groups, and companies to donate coats, host coat drives, and make financial contributions to provide warmth to children and adults in need. The need is more urgent than ever: More than 37 million Americans currently live in poverty. Homelessness rates jumped by 18% in 2024, with more than 771,000 people in the U.S. without housing. Last year, One Warm Coat supported 4,600 coat drives, facilitating the distribution of nearly 500,000 coats nationwide, yet 60% of local nonprofit partners reported not having enough coats to meet the need. 84% of One Warm Coat’s nonprofit partners expect an increased demand for services this year. The City of Chula Vista, in collaboration with the South Bay Sustainable Communities Network, is issuing a community-wide call for volunteers to join the 22nd Annual Beautify Chula Vista Day on Saturday, October 18, 2025, from 8 a.m. to noon. This much-anticipated neighborhood cleanup event aims to engage residents in hands-on beautification efforts across the city. In 2024, over 400 dedicated volunteers removed thousands of pounds of litter and graffiti, making a visible and lasting impact on Chula Vista’s neighborhoods, creeks, and canyons. Now in its 22nd year, Beautify Chula Vista Day continues this powerful tradition of civic engagement and environmental stewardship. Volunteers can choose to begin their day at either Loma Verde Community Center, located at 1420 Loma Lane, or Chula Vista City Hall, located at 276 Fourth Avenue. Upon arrival, participants will check in with event leads, complete a safety orientation, and receive cleanup supplies and instructions for the day’s efforts. All volunteers must register in advance at www.BeautifyChulaVista.org. Participants are asked to provide their own transportation and to wear appropriate clothing and sturdy shoes. They should also bring work gloves, a refillable water bottle, and any snacks or lunch they may need. This event also qualifies for student community service hours. With more than 400 volunteers needed, the event will focus on removing graffiti, collecting litter, and restoring the visual appeal of streets, parks, and public spaces. This is a prime opportunity for residents, families, students, and local organizations to come together, give back, and take pride in their community.
