  • Daniel Hicks (b. 1974, New York) currently works & resides in San Diego, Ca. Self-taught, multidisciplinary artist and designer Daniel Hicks considers the breadth of his work to be a "protracted exercise in pure formalism as well as an ever-evolving engagement with the design process itself." Utilizing a range of materials (from found to fabricated), Daniel designs seemingly ordered, nonrepresentational compositions that are intentionally punctuated by minor structural alterations and subtle graphic irregularities. His insistence on reductive methods of creation, grid-based design principles, and a deliberately narrow color palette allow him to transmit a coherent visual language while navigating multiple avenues of expression. Opening reception: Friday, Mar. 1 from 4-9 p.m. Gallery hours: Saturday and Sunday, Noon - 4 p.m. And by appointment: 858-354-6294 thumbprintgallery@gmail.com Related links: Thumbprint Gallery website | Instagram | Facebook
  • Looking for a unique way to bolster your creativity and infuse your writing projects with new energy? Using images as inspiration can help fire up those juices, often leading you in unexpected directions. Working with personally selected visuals can be a fascinating entry point for unlocking and accessing ideas, and can help bring forth your most authentic voice. Join Kimberly Lee for four delicious weeks of writing with SoulCollage®, an expressive arts method requiring no “artistic ability,” just the willingness to try something new. Participants will be directed through the calming process of making a SoulCollage® card each week, and then we’ll use these creations as the basis for responding to imaginative writing prompts. With attention to character development, point of view, setting, plot, dialogue, tension and obstacles, plus mood and color, we’ll explore how the practice of SoulCollage® can be an uplifting muse, a gentle guide on the writing path, no matter what our goals may be. Whether you’re a fiction writer or memoirist, you’ll find this process inspirational and will leave with many takeaways for your writing journey. By the end, you may have the beginnings of a short piece or a number of concrete elements that can be adapted for a longer project. This series will be conducted according to the Amherst Writers and Artists method, founded by Pat Schneider. Participants will have the choice to share their work and receive feedback as to what was strong and resonant in their freshly-written words. We’ll create a safe environment for play and exploration, the foundation of creativity. Stay Connected with SoulCollage®! Facebook | Instagram | X
