This class is designed for you to tap into your intuition and discover your own style through embracing the process. While practicing the principles of abstract acrylic painting, we will work to find a balance between using these techniques and learning to trust our intuition. The focus will be on process, as we learn together how to start, loosen up, take risks, trust our gut, lean into our emotions, and let go of perfection in our paintings. Along with the foundations of color, composition, and line/shape, we will practice intuitive mark making and layering and allowing each of these to inform what comes next on the canvas. As your artistic voice unfolds, your own unique visual language will appear. Materials: Variety of brushes; any tools, palette knives, wedges, color shapers you have (not necessary, but helpful); acrylic paint in various colors (your favorites but also Titanium White and Raw Umber); palette or palette paper; small canvas (no smaller than 12” x 12”) and any size larger canvas. Note: If you're a beginner, bring a basic starter set of paints or even craft paints. No need to go out and purchase a bunch of expensive paints! A medium-bodied paint is best, but using a variety of fluid medium and heavy-bodied paints will give your work more interest. Oolong Presents “Sun Goin' Down” A Debut Solo Exhibition by 2025 UCSD MFA Graduate John Singletary June 6 to 25, 2025 This powerful body of work, four years in the making, introduces Singletary’s haunting, symbolic, and deeply personal paintings to the public for the first time. Singletary’s painting practice delves into memory and myth. Drawing from Biblical and Classical tales, Southern folklore, his family’s spiritual lineage, and the subconscious, the artist channels a visual language steeped in longing, pain, and transformation. His work explores themes of death, love, and fear, and reanimates the sacred and the subconscious through ritualized technique and iconographic reference. “My aim is to make paintings that create a separation from the self and its fears or desires, creating space for thinking.” In “Sun Goin' Down,” Singletary’s technique and process becomes part of the meaning. Through methods such as sgraffito, sfumato, sanding, and scraping, the surface of each canvas evokes a kind of resurrection—a cycle of death and rebirth in oil and pigment. “In moments where I render carefully, there is longing. In moments where I have sanded the canvas bare, a subconscious death has occurred.” Singletary explores Christianity as both salvation and trauma, magic and evil. His paintings pulse with the ghost-like presence of those who came before, and the spiritual residue of Southern Black life. “Painting is alive—a deity that brings the dead back to life and allows what is absent to appear present.” “Sun Goin’ Down” refuses easy categorization. The works are both confession and apparition, echo and invocation. Rich in symbolism yet elusive in narrative, these paintings ask to be felt more than explained. They speak in the language of dreams—where trauma is transfigured into image, and gesture becomes truth. Learn to needle felt! Sunday, February 9, 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. Experience the magic of wool and learn how to paint using needle felting techniques! In this 3-hour workshop, we will create a marine landscape by layering and felting wool, as well as blending colors together. The addition of yarns will add texture and hues to your creation. Ocean and sunset make wonderful subjects for needle paintings! This class requires the use of sharp needles and you will be provided with fingers guards. No experience necessary. Ages 12+ welcome.
