From gallerist Michael James Armstrong: I’m excited to be showing a new site specific projection by Phil Beaumont. I can’t remember when I first met Phil. It seems he, along with his wife Yuko, have been staples in the San Diego art scene for as long as I’ve lived here. They are routinely some of the most dedicated supporters of local artists and have acquired a well curated collection. Phil is also a talented musician and singer for the band The Color Forty Nine and until recently was the principal at The Museum School for many years. About the exhibition: Phils new body of work is a series of iPhone videos shot in portrait orientation. Varied in subject matter, each video has an overarching theme of quiet solitude and subtle movement that sometimes borders on near stillness. If patient, the viewer is rewarded with an ethereal state of calm. The piece Furano Hotel is a site specific projection that is perfectly situated within Ice Gallery. Ensenada-based artist Guadalupe Vidal will open her first exhibition in the United States at Bread and Salt, in the main gallery, on view beginning Feb. 10. Guadalupe Vidal's work is architectural, often using engraved clay bricks and other constructions to form sculptures and installations. Vidal also uses clay and brick dust on canvases. The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch will once again allow guests to experience the magic of growing color beginning Friday, March 1, 2024 with a dazzling floral display across the hills of Carlsbad, California. The 2024 theme of “Spring into Color” serves as not only nature’s announcement of the arrival of spring but is a celebration of the working farm’s cultivation of fifty-five acres of Giant Tecolote Ranunculus: a flower renowned for its large, double-petaled blooms that sit atop tall, straight stems. The season stretches eight to ten weeks each year with a full slate of activities including live music performances, workshops and wellness classes that harness the power of Mother Nature. “The color that The Flower Fields brings each spring extends far beyond our rows of rainbow ranunculus.” says Fred Clarke, general manager of The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch. “From the brightly painted wagons that bring visitors into the fields, to vendors serving eye-catching lemonade and ice-cream dipped in sprinkles to the blueberry picking, Sea of Sunflowers and various gardens, color truly abounds at every turn.” The 2024 activity calendar is brimming with programming such as the return of the lauded outdoor music series which features performances by Swingergy, The Derringers, Bill Magee, SoRockBlu, Bayou Brothers, Cool Rush and Michele Lundeen. Kline Swonger is a cross-disciplinary artist whose research and sculptural work revolves around perception and psychology of space. She imagines place as residing simultaneously in both physical and emotional landscapes, the moments experienced in-between offering new perspective and opportunity for discovery. Through her work she explores the relationship formed when the boundary between internal and external dissolves, and the consequence of separation or fragmentation. She formally integrates spatial boundaries, subtle shifts in light and details, and manipulated materials which engage the senses into her works. Through aesthetically quiet sculpture installations with the world through their senses, space for reflection is created. Viewers are invited to explore their own thresholds of perception, noticing their engagement with the world through their senses.
