  • February 8 – March 10, 2024 Donald and Darlene Shiley Stage Old Globe Theatre Conrad Prebys Theatre Center Globe-commissioned world premiere By Karen Zacarías Directed by Chay Yew This Globe-commissioned world premiere, based on Edith Wharton’s Pulitzer Prize–winning classic, is set in 1870s Gilded Age New York City, where high society clashes with love. When the glamorous Countess Ellen Olenska sweeps into town, she upends the lives of everyone around her, especially the dashing lawyer Newland Archer. This new adaptation for the stage from Karen Zacarías (Destiny of Desire, Native Gardens) is the kind of lush period production for which The Old Globe is renowned.   • From the museum: For Dear Life is the first historical survey of artistic responses to sickness, health, and medicine broadly. The show is informed in part by MCASD’s position in San Diego County, a hub for health science research as well as biotech and pharmaceutical industries. In the past decade, the art world has witnessed an explosion of artistic activity surrounding issues of illness, disability, caregiving, and the vulnerability of the human body. Set in motion by the emergence of movements for disability justice, this activity accelerated with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Yet since the 1960s, artists have negotiated and deflected the medical gaze, creating works that assert agency in the face of medicalizing labels and that highlight the role of care in producing new forms of community and healing. Increasingly, artists have come to locate illness and disability not in individual bodies, but as part of a web of interconnected societal, environmental, and historical conditions. Funders For Dear Life: Art, Medicine, and Disability is organized by Senior Curator Jill Dawsey, PhD, and Associate Curator Isabel Casso. This exhibition is organized as part of Pacific Standard Time, an initiative of the Getty Foundation.   • Opening Reception: Saturday, March 9, 5–8 p.m., during the Barrio Art Crawl Tarrah Aroonsakool, a first-generation San Diego native with Thai and Lao heritage, embarked on a journey of self-discovery through art. Aroonsakool’s creative path led them to New Orleans, where they found a supportive community and showcased their work globally after her first show in 2013. Motivated by a desire to foster a creative community in their hometown, Aroonsakool returned to San Diego, where they continue to push boundaries and transform their art, incorporating everyday objects and found materials into the work.   • From The Old Globe: The 11th annual Powers New Voices Festival is a three-day event of readings of 10 new American plays by emerging and award-winning playwrights writing for the American theatre today, including new works by San Diegans. The free festival opens on January 12, 2024 and closes on January 14 in the Sheryl and Harvey White Theatre, part of the Globe’s Conrad Prebys Theatre Center. Celebrating Community Voices, an evening of short works created by San Diego playwrights through the Globe’s arts engagement programs Community Voices and coLAB, is scheduled on January 12, 2024. The evening will feature readings of six 10-minute plays by local artists MG Green, Marie Vasari Hislop, Eliza Hugee, Ms. JHawk, Brian T. Josten, and Ric Scales. The first of four full-length new American play readings continues on January 13 with Emerson Loses Her “Miand” by Laura Winters, followed by Globe-commissioned Pleasant by Inda Craig-Galván, The Hispanic/Latino/Latina/Latinx/Latine Vote by Bernardo Cubría, and Globe-commissioned Empty Ride by Keiko Green. Ishinomaki was left devastated after the 2011 tsunami, which took Kisa’s mom in addition to over 3,000 other locals in the sleepy, coastal town full of fascinating characters.   • ABOUT WORKING TITLE Curated by Diana Benavidez and Leslie Ann Leytham, Project [BLANK]’s annual exhibition of local art and music returns with a ritualistic mélange of paintings, sculpture, multimedia art, and live performances. A transborder team of artists and musicians invade the gothic halls of the historic St. Paul’s Cathedral in Bankers Hill and fill it to the brim with works that explore connections between the earthly and the divine. This three-day, community-based event will include new works, world premieres, and thought-provoking performances featuring some of the most exciting creative voices in Southern California, Tijuana, and Baja California. Audiences will embark on a pilgrimage through sacred spaces, profane realities, and everything in between.
