When Pope Pius XII died in 1958, his papers were sealed in the Vatican Secret Archives, leaving unanswered questions about what he knew and did during World War II. In 2020, the archives were finally opened. Based on thousands of never-before-seen documents, David Kertzer’s “The Pope at War” paints a dramatic portrait of what the Pope did and did not do as war enveloped the continent and as the Nazis began their systematic mass murder of Europe’s Jews. Kertzer is the Brown University Dupee University Professor of Social Science, Emeritus, and Research Professor at the Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs at Brown. His publications include the Pulitzer Prize-winning “The Pope and Mussolini: The Secret History of Pius XI and the Rise of Fascism in Europe” (2014); “The Popes against the Jews” (2001); and “The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara” (1998). Gira binacional - UC San Diego Ensamble Cepromusic José Luis Castillo, director artístico Karola Obermüller traverse Aaron Mencher FACE Alex Taylor figments Ignacio Baca Lobera De La Singularidad V The Center for Experimentation and Production of Contemporary Music (Cepromusic), the leading new music ensemble in Mexico, will make binational musical history this month by offering two concerts at the prestigious Conrad Prebys Concert Hall at the University of California San Diego (UCSD). The performances, scheduled for January 30 and 31 at 7 p.m., will mark a milestone for Cepromusic, as they kick off their first international tour since the COVID 19 pandemic. Both concerts will be free and open to the public. Under the baton of their visionary artistic director José Luis Castillo, Cepromusic is proud to present "Translínea. Binational Tour 2024" – a groundbreaking series of concerts that not only celebrates the reemergence of international music making but also marks the ensemble's debut at the renowned UC San Diego venue and their first visit to the US West Coast ever. The tour also includes concerts in the neighboring Mexican cities of Tijuana and Ensenada, yet another first for the Mexico City-based ensemble. The concerts will feature a wide array of adventurous and diverse repertoire, aiming to build a musical bridge between contemporary Mexican composition and global new music. Highlights include works by German composer Karola Obermüller (her first-ever performance on campus since she was hired as a professor at UC San Diego), and by Mexican mavericks Ignacio Baca Lobera and Iván Naranjo. More importantly, Cepromusic will perform compositions by several of the talented graduate students of UC San Diego’s Department of Music – Aaron Mencher, Akari Komura, Alex Taylor, Jiyoung Ko, and Nasim Khorassani. These emerging composers contribute to the rich tapestry of new music, offering a glimpse into the future. The concerts will also feature works by globally acclaimed composers Rebecca Saunders and Liao Lin-Ni, embodying a collaborative spirit that transcends borders. This unique blend of pieces represents a harmonious fusion of cultures, bringing together the diverse influences one can find in the works of Mexican composers, UC San Diego students, and notable figures in the world of new music more broadly.
