  • The Athenaeum Music & Arts Library and Murals of La Jolla present Michael Mercil as he gives attendees an inside look on his career, process, recent projects, and 2023 mural ART IS GOOD FOR YOU, commissioned by Murals of La Jolla. The Ohio-based artist explores the realms of “the near, the low, the common” and incorporates an expansive number of mediums (drawing, painting, needlepoint, sculpture, landscape architecture, film, performance, teaching, and farming) in his art. Painted directly on-site, with a complementary color palette that pops, the text becomes a lively imperative to embrace art as a crucial and ubiquitous aspect of daily life. Mercil received a BFA from the Minneapolis College of Art & Design and an MFA from the University of Chicago. His work has been featured in many prominent institutions, including The Fabric Workshop and Museum, Philadelphia; the DeCordova Sculpture Park and Museum, Lincoln, Massachusetts; The Living Culture Initiative in collaboration with Ann Hamilton at OSU; The Beanfield, The Virtual Pasture, and Site set-aside projects at Wexner Center for the Arts in Columbus; and the Art Market™, an ongoing, Columbus-based studio project. Mercil’s talk begins at 6:30 p.m. and is preceded by at reception at 6 p.m. Stay Updated with Athenaeum Music & Arts Library! Facebook | Instagram | X

Iván Naranjo a fundamental asymmetry The Center for Experimentation and Production of Contemporary Music (Cepromusic), the leading new music ensemble in Mexico, will make binational musical history this month by offering two concerts at the prestigious Conrad Prebys Concert Hall at the University of California San Diego (UCSD). The performances, scheduled for January 30 and 31 at 7 p.m., will mark a milestone for Cepromusic, as they kick off their first international tour since the COVID 19 pandemic. Both concerts will be free and open to the public. Under the baton of their visionary artistic director José Luis Castillo, Cepromusic is proud to present "Translínea. Binational Tour 2024" – a groundbreaking series of concerts that not only celebrates the reemergence of international music making but also marks the ensemble's debut at the renowned UC San Diego venue and their first visit to the US West Coast ever. The tour also includes concerts in the neighboring Mexican cities of Tijuana and Ensenada, yet another first for the Mexico City-based ensemble. The concerts will feature a wide array of adventurous and diverse repertoire, aiming to build a musical bridge between contemporary Mexican composition and global new music. Highlights include works by German composer Karola Obermüller (her first-ever performance on campus since she was hired as a professor at UC San Diego), and by Mexican mavericks Ignacio Baca Lobera and Iván Naranjo. More importantly, Cepromusic will perform compositions by several of the talented graduate students of UC San Diego’s Department of Music – Aaron Mencher, Akari Komura, Alex Taylor, Jiyoung Ko, and Nasim Khorassani. These emerging composers contribute to the rich tapestry of new music, offering a glimpse into the future. The concerts will also feature works by globally acclaimed composers Rebecca Saunders and Liao Lin-Ni, embodying a collaborative spirit that transcends borders. This unique blend of pieces represents a harmonious fusion of cultures, bringing together the diverse influences one can find in the works of Mexican composers, UC San Diego students, and notable figures in the world of new music more broadly. José Luis Castillo, the artistic director of Cepromusic, expressed his anticipation saying: "Performing at UC San Diego's Conrad Prebys Concert Hall for the first time is a momentous occasion for Cepromusic. We are thrilled to showcase the talent of our ensemble and the collaborative spirit that defines our musical journey." Don't miss this historic performance at UC San Diego – a celebration of cultural diversity, innovation, and the universal language of music. For more information about Translínea.
