Using different techniques and mediums, we will find fun ways to approach an often daunting subject. Students will be encouraged to bring photos of family, friends—even pets. We will discuss the best kinds of photos to use and how to use the ones you have even if they aren’t the best quality. There will be a model for one session, and we will try self-portraiture. This is an interesting way to improve your skills, find some new ones, and have fun while you are at it. Materials: A 9” x 12” pad of mixed-media paper; soft vine charcoal (willow is the best); woodless graphite pencil, 6B, 8B, or 9B (the higher the number the better); pencil sharpener; kneaded eraser. Saturday, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. January 25 (1 Day, 5 total hours of instruction) On Location at La Jolla Cove and La Jolla Studio The School of the Arts welcomes LA-based artist Tomory Dodge leading a one-day plein air workshop. Tomory and the class will begin the day at the La Jolla Studio and then walk down to the Cove to paint. (If accessibility is an issue, students are welcome to drive down to the Cove). Tomory will focus on exploring tension within a painting—by pushing the boundaries between representation and abstraction—as well as three-dimensional (3D) space and the physicality of the materials used to paint. Materials: Portable easel; four 8” x 10” or 6” x 8”, good quality canvas boards; half-dozen brushes, white bristle flat or filbert, sizes 2, 4, and 6. One medium-size steel palette knife; small, pointed round brush for detail, sizes 2–4. Ted Geisel, a.k.a. Dr. Seuss, spent his life pushing open the doors of conventional thought, ushering in new directions and ideas, and always looking “through the wrong end of the telescope.” His wife, Audrey, continued that vision as she guided Ted’s legacy across the nearly 30 years following his passing. Such stewardship included the formation of The Art of Dr. Seuss Collection, allowing the world its first chance to see images Ted had made privately yet never shared with the general public. The works included in this exhibition are not only an inspired tribute to Ted and Audrey’s vision, but to those of us who also believe life is better when viewed through the wrong end of the telescope. In homage to this unique perspective, select works in this exhibition include rare examples signed by Audrey Geisel. "25 Year s Through The Wrong End of The Telescope" offers a rare glimpse into the artistic life of this celebrated American icon and chronicles almost seven decades of work that, in every respect, is uniquely, stylistically, and endearingly Seussian.
