The San Diego Tap & Jazz Dance Festival is a vibrant 5-day community event dedicated to celebrating and preserving American Vernacular Dance and its African roots. Organized by Claudia Gomez, owner of Tap Into Yoga & Reiki and Summer Briggs, owner of Rap A Tap Center for the Arts, the festival will be held from Saturday, Nov. 23, 2024, to Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2024, at Keiller Leadership Academy. This festival will feature a diverse range of activities, including tap dance, swing dance, jazz dance, African dance, and breaking classes, along with a music theory class, historical panel discussions, a faculty concert, a student showcase, social dances, and jam sessions. Daily classes will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with special events scheduled for the evenings. Renowned dance educators and musicians from San Diego and beyond will participate as faculty members and performers. The opening faculty concert, featuring a special African Drum and Dance company from San Diego, and a live jazz band, will kick off the festival on Saturday, November 23, at 7 p.m. Additional highlights include an open jam session at Panama 66 in Balboa Park on Sunday, Nov. 24, 2024, and the student showcase on Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2024. Through a multimedia presentation, Kausen will share personal stories of his grandfather’s collaboration with Ted Geisel (Dr. Seuss). Tues, 11/26: Ancient Games Day – Discover a world before video games, as we explore the 5,000-year-old Game of Twenty Squares, and learn to make your own ancient Egyptian Senet board. Learn to play mancala, backgammon, and chess, or try your hand at Apal Uumarr, or the game of stones. Wed, 11/27: Ice Age Extravaganza! – Enjoy our final camp day making your very own ice age rock art. Learn cordage weaving, and basket making, and hone your atlatl throwing and archery skills. Our deep connection with soil and clay fills our lives with beauty and wonder. Each piece we create tells a story about ourselves and our time. Learning how to create pottery reminds us that art is not just about making things beautiful; it’s a way to communicate with the world. This 8-week course teaches us that every piece we make is an opportunity to discover and create within ourselves. Sculptures made of clay have been created since prehistoric times and are still a form of artistic expression today. Artists and artisans around the world practice this art and create human and animal sculptures, geometric objects and shapes, and even create large works of art that tell a story. Sculpture, with a history that goes back centuries, has had a constant presence in the art and culture of different societies. In this 8-class series, students learn to make simple forms and finally proceed to make handmade structures in the shape of plants, animals, and humans. It’s a creative experience that starts from nothing and turns into something meaningful! This course covers the following topics: history of figurative pottery; materials and tools; practical exercises; designing and creating initial forms; creating abstract and organic shapes; understanding the structure of animal bodies and designing facial and body expressions; understanding the structure of human faces and bodies and designing facial and body expressions; and techniques for drying, painting, glazing, and firing clay.
