  • Tuesdays, 9:30 a.m. –12:30 p.m. January 14–February 11 (5 weeks, 15 total hour of instruction) AAC Print Room Looking at a life organically: Pick a time frame or a theme: a day-in-the-life, the places where you have lived, a special trip, or significant events over a lifetime. We will map the event(s), then utilize words, text-as-image, and actual images to represent those events as a vine that winds its way through the pages of an accordion book. This organic approach uncovers the threads that connect these phenomena, as well as your thoughts about them. For the cover page, we will make a low-tech, ink self-portrait. Then, using folded paper, we will create non-adhesive hardcovers to house the accordion pages. The resulting structure will be an exploration of the twists and turns of self-reflection on our past stories and our potential future stories. Materials: Cutting knife, stylus (for scoring), sharp pencils and a good eraser (Pink Pearl is good), glue (UHU glue stick or PVA & brush or small roller), 12” ruler, scissors. Optional/recommended: 12” centering/beveled ruler, bench hook with cutting mat (9” x 12” cutting mat size is ideal), bone folder. Materials will be provided to create the book and the covers.   • Tuesdays, 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. January 7–February 11 (6 weeks, 18 total hours of instruction) AAC Art Studio (Includes model) This is a unique opportunity to study with two accomplished and warmhearted artist-educators in the same course. Ken and Stephanie are both well known for their ability to help each person find their own unique drawing abilities. Each week there will be a life model. On day one, Ken will introduce a simplified approach to gesture drawing and the fundamentals of figure and head construction. During Weeks 2 and 3, Ken will go deeper into the importance of gesture drawing in relation to constructing and composing longer poses. During the final three weeks, Stephanie will continue to build on Ken’s lessons but will include longer poses that will allow students time to incorporate the basics into an actual process of drawing or painting more finished figures and portraits. Materials: You do not need to buy everything on this list. Only buy materials that relate to the medium you plan to work with, or if you are more advanced, bring your own supplies. On day one you will only need newsprint, a drawing board, vine charcoal, kneaded eraser, and one colored pastel for accents.   • Thursday–Friday, 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. February 27 & 28 (2 Days, 8 total hours of instruction) On location at Barnett Ranch Outdoor studies are the key to painting successful landscapes in the studio. Plein air painting is an excellent way to observe color, light, and aerial perspective. This class will focus on composition and color mixing with a limited palette. Each day the workshop will begin with a demo and conclude with a group critique. February should be a great month for painting plein air at Barnett Ranch; with long views, open country, and grasslands beginning to turn green. All levels are welcome in this workshop. Meet up at the Barnett Ranch County Preserve Staging Area: 1500 Deviney Lane at San Vicente Road, Ramona, CA 92065. Materials: portable easel; four 8” x 10” or 6” x 8”, good quality canvas boards; half-dozen brushes, white bristle flat or filbert, # 2, #4, #6. One medium-size steel palette knife; small, pointed round brush for detail #2–#4. Paper towels; odorless turpentine; small jar for turpentine, wood palette; oil paints: Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Red Medium, Cadmium Yellow Medium Cadmium Lemon, Phthalo Blue, Ultramarine Blue, Permalba White, Raw Umber, Cadmium Orange.   • Thursday–Friday, 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. January 9 & 10 (2 Days, 8 total hours of instruction) On location in Balboa Park Outdoor studies are the key to painting successful landscapes in the studio. Each day will begin with a demo and conclude with a group critique. The historic Spanish Baroque architecture and beautiful gardens of Balboa Park are an inspiring and congenial place to paint outdoors. All levels are welcome in this workshop. We will meet up in the Plaza Panama in front of the Timken Art Museum. Materials: portable easel; four 8” x 10” or 6” x 8”, good quality canvas boards; half-dozen brushes, white bristle flat or filbert, # 2, #4, #6. One medium-size steel palette knife; small, pointed round brush for detail #2–#4.   • Wednesday, 2 p.m.– 5 p.m. February 12 (1 Day, 3 total hours of instruction) On location in Mission Hills Paint the excellent views in afternoon light over San Diego from the historic neighborhood of Mission Hills. Students may also choose to paint the charming architecture. Painting outdoors gives the artist the opportunity to experiment with light, color, and atmosphere. This plein air painting class is taught on location in beautiful San Diego. Work with San Diego landscape painter Kevin Inman to learn how to paint spontaneously, simplify a complex subject, and enjoy the moment. Topics include color mixing, design, and how to let go of your inner critic. Materials: Recommended oil or acrylic colors (Gamblin and Rembrandt paints): Limited palette: Alizarin Crimson Permanent, Cadmium Yellow Medium, Ultramarine Blue, Titanium White. This palette saves money but limits your options in advanced painting techniques. Basic palette: Cadmium Yellow Medium (or Hue), Cadmium Yellow Deep (or Hue), Cadmium Red Medium (or Hue), Alizarin Crimson Permanent, Ultramarine Blue, Cerulean Blue Hue, Titanium White, Burnt Umber, or preferred alternatives.   • Sundays, 1 p.m.– 4 p.m. January 12–March 2 (8 weeks, 24 total hours of instruction) La Jolla Studio “Fauvism is not everything, but it is the foundation of everything.”—Henri Matisse Henri Matisse, Andre Derain, and Maurice Vlaminck were the creators of this powerful era in art of the early 1900s. The act of painting itself was at the heart of Fauvism. It was the first movement to insist in explicit terms that a painting is the canvas and the pigments—not the subject. This class will explore the Postimpressionist movement that led to the Fauve movement strongly influencing the art of the 20th century. Leaving behind classic color, perspective, and subject matter, moving into exciting, bold, vibrant colors, spontaneous compositions, and highly gestural application of paint techniques is what we will explore painting in session. A pink sky? Why not! Come join the fun, freedom, and excitement of expressive Fauve painting. This class is for all levels of painters, both beginning and experienced artists. You are also welcome to do your own work. This is a good place to be with other talented painters and enjoy the creative atmosphere here at the Athenaeum.
