  • Regarded as the first major regatta of the year, the San Diego Crew Classic brings together thousands of athletes from more than 100 universities, clubs and high school programs across the United States. Spanning ages 14 – 84, the Crew Classic is a competition for future Olympians as well as for those new to the sport. This event is often a highlight of their competitive rowing careers. The Crew Classic is not only an athletic event with competitors at the peak of physical fitness, but a social gathering for enthusiasts to enjoy great local food, a beer garden with San Diego’s famous local craft breweries, and shopping. The event is held at Mission Bay, just a mile from the Pacific Beach. Many athletes first experience the San Diego Crew Classic as high school competitors. The SDCC is a great introduction to the world of rowing for amateur athletes. It is larger than life — the jumbotron, the considerable number of spectators, and rowing shells as far as the eye can see. For collegiate athletes, the SDCC means a chance to size up the competition from across the nation and to earn rankings which will affect the rest of the season. Alumni of the SDCC can reconnect with former teammates, friends, and coaches. Many alumni continue to race in both alumni and masters’ club events. The Crew Classic is a place to educate your children and family on the beauty of the sport of rowing, the importance of physical activity and a healthy lifestyle, and what it means to be a teammate and to support one another. The San Diego Crew Classic nurtures young athletes as they become socially responsible adults who will pass on the lessons learned from competition. The event welcomes generation after generation to the sport of rowing. Visit: San Diego Crew Classic San Diego Crew Classic on Instagram and Facebook

  • Every short story needs conflict, intriguing characters, realistic dialogue, consistent point of view, and a solid structure in less than 10,000 words. In this student directed class, we will cover all these elements, but in the order and at the pace determined by the participants. Where are you in your writing? Are you just starting out? Are you struggling with an incomplete story? Are you an experienced writer in need of motivation and fresh input from a supportive group? Do you need help with plot and outline? Does your dialogue sound unnatural? We will answer these questions with writing exercises and encouraging critiques. This class is for new or continuing students. • Note: Though this class is offered as part of the Novel Writing Certificate Program, there is no pre-requisite to join this class. All students, members, and nonmembers are encouraged to enroll. So you’ve finished writing your novel — what next? What do published novelists do between that raw first draft and the final manuscript to make their plots sizzle and their prose sing? The key lies in reworking your manuscript until your writing jumps off of the page. If you have completed the first draft of a novel, this workshop will help you develop skills to shape your plot for maximum dramatic impact and give life and texture to characters, dialogue, and setting. Note: There will be no class on Saturday, November 1st. Thank you for your understanding! San Diego Writers, Ink on Facebook / Instagram
  • Ekphrastic poets find their inspiration in the visual. Their poems imagine, describe, or expand upon the “story” of an image or work of art. Every ekphrastic poem is its own work of art, separate but related to the visual inspiration. In this workshop, you will learn about well-known and not-so-well-known ekphrastic poems, and you will learn a methodology so that you can confidently approach this exciting cross-genre space. You will work in the Inspirations Gallery and create one or more unique poems. You will have the option to share your work aloud, as well as past poems, in a book in the gallery. Sharing is NOT required but an option for anyone who’d like to do it. San Diego Writers, Ink on Facebook / Instagram

Saturdays, October 25, November 1, 8, 22, from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m., with the last class of the series from 10 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. In this 4-week course, 3-hour per class series, you’ll build a strong foundation in working with clay on the pottery wheel.
