The Black Iris Project's mission is to harness the Black community's inherent creative spirit to encourage and inspire youth of color to pursue art, movement and music as an expressive outlet and a means for collective healing. “Since its inception in 2016, The Black Iris Project has been committed to telling Black narratives through ballet, using art as a mirror to reflect the times and consistently intertwining themes of social justice in everything we do. As someone who has worked to break through many doors in the world of dance, particularly ballet, I feel it is our duty as artists to be a catalyst for those that are unheard, unseen, and undervalued. The Philippine Cultural Arts Festival returns to Balboa Park on August 14, 2022, after two years of absence due to the COVID-19 pandemic lock-down on public events. The SAMAHAN Filipino American Performance Arts & Education Center will hold its 35th Philippine Cultural Arts Festival on Sunday, August 14, 2022 from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. in Balboa Park, at the corner of Park Boulevard and Presidents Way. Admission is FREE! A family-oriented event focused on cultural heritage, entertainment and networking, this festival appeals to the whole family and allows San Diego locals as well as tourists the opportunity to learn about Philippine culture and performing arts through dances and music.

Mississippi native Karlous Miller grew up in a large blended family including eight siblings, who all became a major influence on his edgy and boisterous comedy style. This year we honor the 51 years of florecimiento at Balboa Park as a Xicano, Mexican, Indigenous and Latina/o/x-serving community cultural center. The posada coincides with our December exhibition honoring Indigenous Sovereignty and Indigenous cultural foodways. The Centro Cultural represents the continuous florecimiento of nuestro movimiento as a diverse yet unified community. Pa’lante siempre pa’lante!
