Join us for Ancient DNA: New Revelations, a free CARTA public symposium! Dramatic advances in ancient DNA technologies have revolutionized our understanding of the human past. Since the publication of the first ancient human genomes in 2010, the field of archaeogenomics has grown at an astonishing pace, and today the genomes of more than 10,000 ancient humans have been sequenced. From discovering surprising new members of the human lineage to revealing the unexpected histories of infectious diseases to tracking the great migrations that laid the foundations of present-day societies, ancient DNA is rewriting the human story. This symposium explores the diverse applications of archaeogenomics in shaping not only a new vision of the human past, but also in creating a greater understanding of the present and our shared human future. The Sweetwater Woman’s Club is bringing some early holiday spirit to the South Bay—hosting its 57th Annual Holiday Craft Show. This craft show will feature nearly two dozen local artisans and small businesses selling their goods and products—ornaments and decor, jewelry, quilts, soaps, baked goods, silent auction items, and raffle dozens of gifts donated from local businesses—to fundraise for local scholarships. Whether you’re a beginner or intending to deepen your relationship, all are welcome to experience the world of clay in this fun and friendly environment. By focusing on techniques to confidently create functional and aesthetic pottery, we will learn creative design, how to throw on the wheel, trimming and glazing! Projects will be ready to pick up 3-4 weeks after the last class. Beginners welcome. Organized by the Alliance Française San Diego in collaboration with esteemed partners including Gallimard, Villa Albertine, and the Athenaeum, this cultural event promises inspiration and discovery. Open to all, the festival brings together Francophone authors, educators, artists, and students for a rich, immersive experience across San Diego. We are proud to welcome acclaimed author Éric Fottorino as our Literary Guest of Honor, and Ann Craig as our Honorary Patron alongside a distinguished lineup of local and international voices. Éric Fottorino is an acclaimed French journalist, novelist, and co-founder of some of France’s most innovative literary publications. A former reporter, editor-in-chief, and publisher at Le Monde, he is the author of over forty books, including sixteen novels published by Gallimard. His work has earned him numerous literary awards, including the Prix Femina and the France Télévisions Prize. Passionate about cycling, storytelling, and the power of the written word, Fottorino brings a singular voice to contemporary French literature. Noche De Mole is the Sherman Height Community Center’s annual fundraising event. The evening event marks the start of our weeks-long Día de los Muertos celebration, now in its 31st year! Noche de Mole features a dinner menu inspired by a variety of regional moles from Mexico, signature beverages, entertainment, and a special preview of more than 25 community altars. The event is held mostly outdoors, except for the altar preview, which is indoors.
