  • In this final ONLINE workshop of the Certificate in Poetry program, the student will concentrate on the design of a publishable manuscript. The student will continue workshopping poems, reading and analyzing books of poetry, providing valuable comment and feedback on each other’s manuscripts. Further, the student will discover publishing sources for individual poems and contests for chapbook and complete book manuscripts, the necessary recordkeeping for this endeavor, and practice how to give a professional poetry reading. For students not ready to compile a manuscript, each class also includes a writing prompt, short lesson or introduction to a poet, and a read & critique session. Each participant will choose one poetry craft book and submit by week 5, a one to two page analysis of the book. Poem prompts will be given each week with the anticipation that the participants will generate new work. Students will prepare a number of copies of their completed manuscript for distribution to the other students at the end of class three. Participants are expected to actively participate in the read and critique portions of the workshop for both individual poems and manuscripts. San Diego Writers, Ink on Facebook / Instagram
  • A plan proposed Thursday by the Interior Department would open up new drilling on federal waters off California and off the coast of Florida for the first time in decades.
  • The rarely screened "Four Nights of a Dreamer" is Robert Bresson’s great forgotten masterpiece, a stark yet haunting ode to romantic idealism and the capriciousness of love. Adapted from Fyodor Dostoevsky’s “White Nights,” "Four Nights" follows Jacques (Guillaume des Forêts), a lonely artist who roams bohemian Paris in search of the girl of his dreams. One night he saves a beautiful young woman, Marthe, from plunging into the Seine in despair over her rejection by an avoidant lover (Maurice Monnoyer). Jacques compassionately attempts to reunite Marthe with her beau, but his feelings for his new friend soon become less than platonic and his investment in her personal drama far from selfless. "Four Nights of a Dreamer" has been called the French master’s “loveliest” work: with his signature minimalism, Bresson films the shimmering beauty of nocturnal Paris as it enfolds his characters in endless possibility—subtly capturing the wonder of unexpected connection and the mystery of fate. • In the play by A. M. Dolan, Clapp portrays Frost, a native Californian, as the famed poet "bards around" the country, speaking to thousands at the height of his enduring popularity. The production blends Frost’s poetry, speeches, and conversations to offer a multidimensional portrait of the iconic American writer and four-time Pulitzer-Prize winner. Clapp, perhaps best known for playing detective Greg Medavoy in the12-season TV drama "NYPD Blue," "embodies the poet's joy and mischievous sense of humor," said the Boston Globe. The play is being produced by poet and Frost authority Robert Bernard Hass, executive director of the Robert Frost Society, and Rancho Santa Fe poet and Frost scholar Jim Hurley, associate director of the society. "We are thrilled to join with North Coast Rep to bring this superb production to San Diego for the first time," said Hass. "Those who know and revere Robert Frost will find him again in their midst through Gordon’s impeccable portrayal; others will meet a timeless Frost for the first time and fall for his irresistible mind and charm." The event will mark the latest in a series of recent collaborations by the Frost Society to present the California-born poet's work in three successive artistic genres: poetry, music, and drama The series launched in March 2024 with a four-day celebration of the poet's sesquicentennial year that drew hundreds of Frost lovers to hear ten of America's premier poets, including Pulitzer Prize-winner Tracy K. Smith. The following November, the Society collaborated with the San Diego Master Chorale in its interpretation of Randall Thompson's Frostiana, a composition based on seven of Frost's most beloved poems. The multi-venue events drew an estimated audience of 1,000. "This Verse Business" will run November 3 and 4 at 7:30 p.m. at North Coast Rep: 987 Lomas Santa Fe Drive, Solana Beach, CA 92075. To Purchase tickets to This Verse Business call (858) 481-1055 or visit www.northcoastrep.org. Tickets are $45. Senior, Military and Student discounts are available.
