  • Stars of stage and screen Matthew Broderick and Ellie Kemper perform the acclaimed A.R Gurney’s Love Letters in support of La Jolla Playhouse. Love Letters, a Pulitzer Prize finalist for Drama, is a dramatic staged reading comprised of letters exchanged between two friends over a lifetime. Andrew and Melissa, both born into wealth and position, begin their correspondence in childhood with birthday thank-you notes and summer camp postcards. Their letters continue through boarding school and college years while they are romantically attached and later through their individual marriages and careers. As the actors read the letters aloud, an evocative, touching, frequently funny tale unfolds in which what is implied is as revealing and meaningful as what is actually written down. A.R. Gurney’s unique and imaginative piece premiered in 1988, and has been enjoyed everywhere from Broadway to Berlin, Scotland to Sydney, Miami to Mumbai — including the courtroom during the O.J. Simpson trial as a special performance for the sequestered jury. Now coming to San Diego for one night only, Matthew Broderick (currently starring in the Playhouse’s Babbitt) and Ellie Kemper (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, The Office) join an impressive cast list of Hollywood and Broadway luminaries who have taken the stage, two by two to tell the story of Andrew Makepeace Ladd III and Melissa Gardner through these poignant letters — leaving the enduring message: you never forget your first love. There are less than 400 tickets available for this rare event and we expect they will sell swiftly. We would love to share this unique experience with you and your lifelong friends. • Update Nov. 14, 2023: This event has been canceled by the organizers. It’s that time of year again! Join us for our Annual Turkey Calling Show and learn more about the beloved turkey through calling techniques and more. This noisy show at the Library has become a community tradition. Kids are welcome (and they’ll be reciting turkey-related riddles). Presented as an old-time radio show, this celebration is filled with music, sound effects, stories and facts of interest… prizes, too (no one leaves empty-handed). Your host and bandleader Scott Paulson, a UC San Diego alumnus and exhibits and events coordinator at the Library, has been lauded by the San Diego Union-Tribune for his entertaining shows: “an avant-garde vaudevillian, think Samuel Beckett meets John Cage.” The Los Angeles Times relayed “Paulson’s brand of G-rated fun, a sort of modern-day morphing of Captain Kangaroo and Spike Jones, is always lively and at times wonderfully chaotic.” Special guests this year: Story Lady Melanie Peters, DJ Camille Cannon and Turkey Hotline Operator Karen Fisher. Location: UC San Diego Library, Seuss Room For more information visit: library.ucsd.edu
