Using a SEL (Social Emotional Learning) toolkit developed by “With These Hands I Can,” the exhibit encourages ownership and fosters ongoing dialogue through art. Featuring portraits and stories written by local farmworkers, this exhibit aims to take up space, be seen, and amplify their voices. The Hillcrest Community Ofrenda was envisioned by Rick Cervantes to expand upon the ofrenda he had built in his home for many years in honor of brother who was murdered in 2016. To make the ofrenda a project for the entire community to participate in, Rick decided to build the Hillcrest Community Ofrenda at the base of the Hillcrest Pride Flag starting in 2022 to provide a space for the entire Hillcrest and LGBTQ communities to honor their loved ones. The ofrenda will be built on Monday, Oct. 28 starting at 4 p.m., and will stay up 24 hours a day through 5 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 31. Community volunteers will take shifts watching over the ofrenda day and night. Community members are welcome to stop by anytime to view the ofrenda or place mementos.
