Artist Mary Jhun has been painting her "girls" for decades: surrealist silhouettes with intricate, dreamlike details. She's also struggled with sleep apnea her entire life, and when she introduced a CPAP machine to sleep better, she lost her dreams — and with them, her surreal, creative muse.

"Letras y Pintura" is a living celebration of youth power, where art becomes resistance, pride, and transformation. Join us for the opening reception on Saturday, June 7, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. as we honor the voices and visions of young people who are reclaiming their narratives, resisting injustice, and transforming culture through art. This exhibition highlights the courage and brilliance of emerging artists by featuring protest posters from the LMEC student walkout, graffiti-inspired artwork, and the youth-designed poster for the 55th Chicano Park Day. This exhibition will explore art that has emerged from the surf-culture lifestyle and surfing’s influence on artists. Everyone who has experienced the feeling of riding a wave understands just how hard it is to describe that incredible sensation, referred to as “stoke”. It seems that only through creative self-expression can surfer-artists capture the essence of stoke and the inspiration that can be found between the surfer and the wave. Artists who surf may take this creative energy in many directions and may explore subjects outside of surfing and surf culture. This joint exhibition will feature a variety of media, from traditional art making methods to works in resin, murals, surfboards, graphic art, sculpture, or fabric, all with the goal to convey the creative power that all artists experience, on or off the wave. in^set is a flexible chamber ensemble founded in 2018 by David Aguila (trumpet), Teresa Díaz de Cossio (flute), and Ilana Waniuk (violin), dedicated to creation, improvisation, and experimentation. Committed to expanding instrumental practice beyond the confines of contemporary classical music, in^set explores the sonic and visual possibilities of everyday objects, hacked electronics, graphic notation, and hybrid media. "Traces in Sound and Light" is a program that traverses the spaces between acoustic and electronic, composed and improvised, visual and sonic. Featuring works by Nathan Haering, Melissa Vargas Franco, and in^set members Aguila, Díaz de Cossio, and Waniuk. The concert culminates in the premiere of a new work by Jacques Zafra. Each piece explores different sonic worlds inspired by graphic notation, visual interplay, and experimental traces in sound and light.
