Reception with both artists, Elsa Orozco-Toops and Luz Shephard, at 12 p.m. - 2 p.m. on July 19, 2025. The award-winning and wide-ranging artwork of Luz Shepard and Elsa Orozco-Toops will be decorating the walls of the Winer Family Community Room & Art Gallery from July to August. Luz Shepard has enjoyed learning a variety of art styles throughout her life, but over the past 30 years, she has focused on pastels and Sumi-e. Shepard’s art is inspired by the beautiful nature of San Diego, and some of her favorite drawing and paintings are of the epiphyllum flowers in her own backyard. Elsa Orozco-Toops’ also likes to work with a variety of art styles, including oil, water, acrylic, ink, ceramics, and couture. Elsa describes the meaning behind her art as her passion for life, nature, and the study of humanity. Don’t miss the chance to view their unique artwork! We're opening our doors to share how San Diego youth are using media arts to express themselves and change their communities. Join us for an evening of hands-on activities where you can create your own art alongside our young artists. Try making zines, taking creative portraits, painting in virtual reality, or designing kaleidoscope art. Watch films made by our students and browse their powerful publications about issues that matter to them. This free event welcomes everyone – families, educators, artists, and anyone curious about youth media arts. Our students and staff will be there to guide you through activities and share their stories. It's a chance to see firsthand how creativity empowers young people. We're hoping to bring together hundreds of community members who believe in the power of youth voice. Come discover what happens when you put creative tools in the hands of young people. EC Gallery will have 80 original animation cels works of art in their "Vintage Animation Show." The show will feature a gallery of animated original cels that were used to create all the iconic cartoons from Disney to Hannah Barbara through Warner Bros. Because the cels are where it all started, it is a cool off-site Con activation spot. Cel animation was a dominant animation technique, particularly in the 20th century, before the rise of computer animation. Cel art is extremely popular and highly sought after by collectors. All the cels are pretty fun and interesting but one of the cels they will have is from Snow White which is the first animated full-length movie created from cels. It even won an honorary Academy Award (an Oscar) in 1939 for its significance as a pioneering work in animated film. In their West Coast debut at Oolong Gallery, "Sky written, cosmic draw," artists Ivan David Ng and Sergio Suárez invite viewers into a realm where the boundaries of identity dissolve, and abstraction becomes a language of wonder, longing, and imagined unity. Originally from Singapore and currently on faculty at OSU, David Ng explores the order of fragmentation through conceptual and materially altered studies that scatter celestially across well-considered surfaces in drawing, fresco, experimental photography, 3D printing, and collage. His “scrambling” process generatively remixes materials, translating the endurance and displacement of a diasporic lineage into patterns that swirl and slither, refusing stillness. Suarez, a Mexican-born, Atlanta-based artist, bridges spirit and matter through a practice spanning printmaking, woodblock carving, painting, sculpture, and installation. His works stage the dialogue between the sacred and profane, often etched as depersonalized figures, are animated by the opposing tensions in archetypal forces (i.e. bodily desire and the limits in temperance, fire as regenerative and destructive). Together, Ivan David Ng and Sergio Suarez create a contemporary codex that nudges curiosity into the conceptual articulation of a mythopoetic way of knowing. Oolong Gallery on Instagram
