Superstar cellist Santiago Cañón-Valencia returns to open our season with a dreamy duo program of French sonatas, unique transcriptions, and Stravinsky’s "Suite Italienne" (adapted from his ballet "Pulcinella"). Cañón-Valencia is a BBC Next Generation Artist and Tchaikovsky Competition silver medalist; his skill is hailed by The Strad as “technically flawless … totally under the skin of the composers’ idioms.” Program: Henri Duparc (1848–1933) - Lamento from "Melodies" Claude Debussy (1862–1918) - Cello Sonata Maurice Ravel (1875–1937) - “Posthume” Sonata Francis Poulenc (1899–1963) - "Suite Française" - "Pause" - "Ravel" - "Pavane pour une infante défunte" - "Pièce en forme de Habanera" Igor Stravinsky (1882–1971) - "Suite Italienne" Colombian cellist Santiago Cañón-Valencia is a prolific soloist, composer, commissioner, recording artist, painter, and photographer. A 2022 BBC New Generation Artist, he was born in Bogotá in 1995 and made his debut with the Orquesta Filarmónica de Bogotá at age six before going on to win the Silver Medal at the 2019 XVI International Tchaikovsky Competition, the 2018 Starker Foundation Award, third prize at the 2017 Queen Elisabeth International Competition, and first prize at the Carlos Prieto International Cello Competition, among many other accolades. During the 2025–2026 season, Cañón-Valencia takes on an international schedule, including solo recitals in Spain and Portugal, a performance with the Macedonian Philharmonic, and a seat on the jury for the Budapest International Cello Competition. In the United States, he performs with the Kansas City Symphony, Montgomery Symphony Orchestra, Grand Rapids Symphony, and Camerata Pacifica. He also appears in recitals with pianist Victor Asuncion at Stanford and in La Jolla. His Latin American schedule takes him to the Puerto Rico Symphony, the Festival de Música de Morelia in Mexico, and the Cartagena Music Festival in Colombia. Cañón-Valencia’s solo career has taken him worldwide, with multiple world and regional premieres. In 2025–2026, he premieres Amparo Angel’s Cello Concerto at the Morelia Festival in Mexico. Previously, he performed World premieres, including Carlos Andrés Mejía’s cello concerto “Aurora” at Colombia’s Pereira Music Fest, Jorge Pinzón’s cello concerto “Rapsodia a los 4 Elementos” at the Cartagena International Music Festival, and Carlos Izcaray's commissioned cello concerto Stringmaster with the Alabama Symphony Orchestra. In 2024, Cañón-Valencia released his debut single on Deutsche Grammophon, a recording of Arvo Pärt’s Fratres with pianist Naoko Sonoda. Two additional singles will follow. He has recorded four additional complete albums, the most recent being "Ascenso on Sono Luminus" (2022). Hailed by the Washington Post for his “poised and imaginative playing,” Filipino American pianist Victor Santiago Asuncion has appeared in concert halls in Brazil, Canada, Ecuador, France, Italy, Germany, Japan, Mexico, the Philippines, Spain, Turkey, and the United States as a recitalist and concerto soloist. He made his orchestral debut at age 18 with the Manila Chamber Orchestra and his New York recital debut in Carnegie’s Weill Recital Hall in 1999. In addition, he has worked with conductors including Sergio Esmilla, Enrique Batiz, Mei Ann Chen, Zeev Dorman, Arthur Weisberg, Corrick Brown, David Loebel, Leon Fleisher, Michael Stern, Jordan Tang, and Bobby McFerrin. A chamber music enthusiast, he has performed with artists such as Lynn Harrell, Zuill Bailey, Andres Diaz, James Dunham, Antonio Meneses, Joshua Roman, Cho-Liang Lin, Giora Schmidt, and the Dover, Emerson, Serafin, Sao Paulo, and Vega String Quartets. He was a member of the chamber music faculty of the Aspen Music Festival, and the Garth Newel Summer Music Festival. He was also the pianist for the Garth Newel Piano Quartet for three seasons. Festival appearances include the Amelia Island, Highland-Cashiers, Music in the Vineyards, and Santa Fe. His recordings include the complete Beethoven Sonatas with cellist Tobias Werner, Sonatas by Shostakovich and Rachmaninoff with cellist Joseph Johnson, the Rachmaninoff Sonata with cellist Evan Drachman, and the Chopin and Grieg Sonatas, also with cellist Evan Drachman. He is featured on the award-winning recording "Songs My Father Taught Me" with Lynn Harrell, produced by Louise Frank and WFMT-Chicago. Asuncion is the founder and artistic and board director of FilAm Music Foundation, a nonprofit foundation dedicated to promoting Filipino classical musicians through scholarship and performance. He received his Doctor of Musical Arts in 2007 from the University of Maryland at College Park under the tutelage of Rita Sloan. He is a Steinway artist. Join the Pacific Southwest Railway Museum Association in our annual Pumpkin Express Halloween Celebration! Come ride our decorated vintage railcars through the San Diego County back country as fall descends upon Campo, CA. The Pumpkin Express winds down the hill through some of the most scenic parts of the historic San Diego and Arizona Railway. After the train returns to the museum grounds, passengers head to the Display Building where children and their parents enjoy decorating pumpkins from our outdoor pumpkin patch and viewing our collection of Halloween scenes and haunted train cars. Free Teen Art is a free program for teens, who are interested in art-making as an enrichment activity that goes beyond making crafts. The aim of the program is to provide a space for youth to create art, share stories, collaborate, explore, and identify new ways to use art in their lives. The Athenaeum offers facilities, resources, guidance, instruction, and support. The open studio program includes a rotation of multidisciplinary art instructors offering workshops in their respective fields, as well as curricular activities that involve the use of the Athenaeum library resources as a starting point for projects. Activities include drawing, painting, research, and introduction to various media. Canada Kerwin has worked as a K–Grade 2 art volunteer since 2005, creating age-appropriate lessons that include introduction to art theory and artists’ biographies and tie-in to curricula as needed. Retired from the healthcare field, Canada also served in the US Navy. She applies her background experience to her ongoing art studies at Mira Costa College, focusing on the human form through life drawing and sculpture. The 48th annual Mt. Carmel Tournament of Bands, San Diego County’s largest high school marching band competition, is set for Saturday, Oct. 25 at Mt. Carmel High School in Rancho Penasquitos. The tournament will showcase the music and artistic pageantry of 38 marching bands from across Southern California and will feature both parade and field show competitions. It is the largest fundraiser of the year for the school’s music program. Proceeds will benefit the nonprofit Mt. Carmel Music Foundation and will be used to support the school’s band, color guard and orchestra programs. Field show performances by small bands will start at 8 a.m. at Mt. Carmel’s Sundevil Stadium, followed by a free parade band review starting at approximately 11:45 a.m. in the school’s parking lot. Field shows with large bands will start at approximately 2:45 p.m. at Sundevil Stadium. Performances will conclude with special appearances by marching bands from San Diego State University and the United States Marine Corps. Food, drink and merchandise concessions will be available throughout the day and evening. Tickets for stadium field shows and award ceremonies are $15 for students, seniors and military; $20 for adult general admission; and $35 for adult reserved. Tickets can be purchased either in advance or at the event. Stadium admission is free for kids age 5 and under. The school’s parking lot will not be available for public parking the day of the event, so spectators should park in the neighborhoods surrounding the school. Mt. Join Janice Smith, VMF’s Education Coordinator and Certified Forest Therapy Guide, on a guided Forest Bathing walk at VMF's Volcan Mountain Nature Center in Julian, CA. Forest Bathing, also called Shinrin-Yoku, is a practice that supports healing and wellness through guided sensory immersion in forests and other natural environments. It is not a hike with a destination or goal, rather a series of guided open invitations aimed at slowing down and taking time to wander and notice nature. Shinrin-Yoku originated in Japan in the 1980’s to address a spike in stress related illness during the new tech boom. Shinrin in Japanese means “forest” and yoku means “bath.” So Shinrin-Yoku means bathing in the forest atmosphere or taking in the forest through your senses with the intention of receiving therapeutic benefits. The walk ends with a tea ceremony, using foraged local plants made by the guide. Note: This experience is for adults only and is limited to 10 participants. Join Judy Reeves and Robb Donaldson for a New Year’s Eve celebration of fun and literary games as we write our way into 2026. We’ll delve into New Year’s traditions and legends (maybe create some of our own), write to prompts, and generally have a good time. Together we’ll count down the minutes til midnight and welcome the New Year with toasts and cheers. There will be treats, and you’re welcome to bring goodies (and libations) to share. Judy is a writer and teacher whose books include A Writer’s Book of Days, named “Best Nonfiction” by the San Diego Book Awards; Writing Alone, Writing Together; A Creative Writer’s Kit; The Writer’s Retreat Kit and, most recently, Wild Women, Wild Voices. Her fiction, nonfiction, and poetry has appeared in the San Diego Reader; The Frozen Moment; A Year in Ink; Connotations Press; Serving House Journal; Waymark; Expressive Writing, Classroom and Community, and other journals and anthologies. Two plays, written with a women’s writing ensemble, were produced by the Fritz Theater. She’s also served as editor for several journals and chapbooks, including three editions of A Year in Ink. She has been leading community-based writing practice groups for thirty years and teaches at writing conferences internationally and at San Diego Writers, Ink, a nonprofit literary center she cofounded. Robert experiences creative writing as a potent healing tool because the tales of our past, moments both extraordinary and mundane, are deeply meaningful and always worth written celebration as either fiction or memoir.
