  • Note: Though this class is offered as part of the Certificate in Poetry, there is no pre-requisite to join this class. All students, members, and nonmembers are encouraged to enroll. In this final workshop of the Certificate in Poetry program, the student will concentrate on the design of a publishable manuscript. The student will continue workshopping poems, reading and analyzing books of poetry, providing valuable comment and feedback on each other’s manuscripts. Further, the student will discover publishing sources for individual poems and contests for chapbook and complete book manuscripts, the necessary recordkeeping for this endeavor, and practice how to give a professional poetry reading. For students not ready to compile a manuscript, each class also includes a writing prompt, short lesson or introduction to a poet, and a read & critique session. Each participant will choose one poetry craft book and submit by week 5, a one to two page analysis of the book. Poem prompts will be given each week with the anticipation that the participants will generate new work. Students will prepare a number of copies of their completed manuscript for distribution to the other students at the end of class three. Participants are expected to actively participate in the read and critique portions of the workshop for both individual poems and manuscripts. San Diego Writers, Ink on Facebook / Instagram

  • Kumeyaay historian Ethan Banegas Luiseño-Kumeyaay (SDSU-American Indian Studies) discusses the process to develop a community-engaged comic that speaks from the perspective of the Kumeyaay people. This comic is a way to tell stories of Kumeyaay people from past to present and engage with their own communities, schools, and beyond. Hear more about how tribal historians are driving the work of this visual storytelling project as a creative team brings it to life. About Ethan Ethan grew up on the Barona Reservation in San Diego County. He received his Bachelor of Arts in History, Religious Studies, and Political Science in 2009 and his Master of Arts degree in History in 2017 from the University of San Diego (USD). Banegas is owner of Kumeyaay.com and Historian for the San Diego History Center, which operates the Junípero Serra Museum. He was first published in 2017 (Indian Gaming in the Kumeyaay Nation). In 2020, he published the Kumeyaay Oral History Project, a community-based research project, after collecting thirty-three personal interviews, video-taped oral histories, and photographs from San Diego’s First People. In 2024, he published two comics—“Beyond Gaming” and “Our Past, Present, and Future”—and served as project director and author of the Kumeyaay Visual Storytelling Project. Through these community-based projects, Professor Banegas collected the voice of the Kumeyaay people, giving a voice to the voiceless. Mingei International Museum on Facebook / Instagram
  • Inspired by the varied stitching techniques featured in "Fashioning An Icon: Virgin of Guadalupe Imagery in Textile Design", join us for our monthly stitching self guided workshop held at the George Nakashima table in Mingei's Founders Gallery. June’s project will be Tenango-inspired embroidery. Similar to Hñähñu (also known as Otomi), Tenago stitching is visible in a few textiles depicting The Virgin of Guadalupe on view in the gallery. This stitch is also known as “Pata de Gallo” or “Pata de Cabra” and could be described as a modified backstitch. Each month, engage in a unique, self-guided project centered around the textiles shown in "Fashioning an Icon." All skill levels are welcome. Mingei International Museum on Facebook / Instagram
