The Dia de los Muertos festival is an important day to celebrate cultural pride in its many manifestations. When performances start, the giant garage-like door of the Performance Annex rises, and the music spills out from the stage and swells throughout the crowd nearby on the park lawn. Dancers grace the stage, and lyrical or staccato rhythms vibrate. Ever popular, Victoria Mariachi, and Rick and Friends return. There is dance for every taste from San Diego Ballet to Aztec Dancers. Theater lovers of all ages will be treated to The Old Globe and Fern St. Circus. Youth participate in a drum lesson with Drummers Without Borders, and a drum parade follows with colorful giant banners, inviting all to join. Family and community altars abound. There will be a Fun Zone for young ones with bouncy “houses.” Paper mask making activities for all ages is hosted by San Diego Guild of Puppetry. On Friday, October 24, Songwriter Sanctuary will host Shea Givens, DevvLove, and SDMA Artist of the Year Anthony Cullins performing original music in a Nashville-style round. The event is hosted by the legendary Jeff Berkley in partnership with Normal Heights United. (4650 Mansfield St. Suggested Donation $10. All ages. Doors 6:30 p.m., Music 7 p.m.) All donations collected go directly to artists, and no one is turned away for lack of funds. About the Artists Shea Givens, a Missouri native now based in Southern California, is a musician known for her powerful live performances. With influences from R&B, Neo-Soul, Blues, Rock, and Country, she is unafraid to experiment with genre styles. Shea's music explores themes of love, mental health, and self-acceptance, drawing from personal experiences. She recently released the song "anxieties" both as a solo performance and with her band, showcasing her versatile musical style. Currently, Shea is working on her upcoming album with her bandmates, with the first single set to release in May 2024. Anthony Cullins, known as “The Fallbrook Kid,” fuses blues, funk, rock, and soul into a dazzling guitar style that’s earned him San Diego Music Awards for Best Blues Artist (2023) and Artist of the Year (2025). He has performed alongside icons including Frank Hannon, Greg Douglass, and Kid Ramos. DevvLov delivers a unique blend of rhythm and soul, performing from his cajón while looping percussion and keys. His sound weaves influences from Alicia Keys, Damien Rice, Bon Iver, Bob Marley, and Michael Jackson into something all his own. Join Linda Cassady for a journey into the literary wonderland of Charles Dodgson, better known as Lewis Carroll, through the treasured Cassady Carroll Collection of USC's Special Collections. This engaging lecture explores how a remarkable book collection has inspired students to discover the genius behind Alice's adventures, transforming some into artists in their own right. Discover the extensive works by and about Lewis Carroll housed in the University of Southern California Special Collections, and learn how an innovative Wonderland Award competition sparks the imagination of Southern California students as they pursue and rediscover Dodgson's legacy. Come see how students tumble down their own rabbit holes of creativity, finding Alice in the wonderland of their own imaginations through art, literature, and scholarly exploration. The Carroll Collection The Cassady Lewis Carroll Collection was established in 2000 and has grown to contain more than 6,000 rare books, pamphlets, letters, and other items related to the work of Lewis Carroll including inscribed editions, books from Carroll‘s own library, and many works by major illustrators of the Alice stories. There are signed copies of movie scripts, playbills from stage adaptations, Victorian-era playing cards, and pop-up books. More recently, comic books, graphic novels, manga editions, literary parodies, computer games, movies, and original art work related to Carroll and his Alice books are part of the collection. The Wonderland Award The Annual Wonderland Award is an annual multidisciplinary competition at the University of Southern California that encourages new scholarship and creative work related to Lewis Carroll. A primary goal is to promote use of the G. Edward Cassady, M.D., and Margaret Elizabeth Cassady, R.N., Lewis Carroll Collection, held in Doheny Library at USC. Since 2005, about 600 students have reimagined, reinterpreted, and remixed Carroll’s stories. Submissions include film and screenplays; poetry and readings; short fiction; book art [writing desks, boxes of wonder, missing diaries]; music, lyrics, scores, and performances; art [photography, painting, digital art, art installations]; ballet and dance; golf courses, board and digital games [with music, readings, and polysyllogisms]; illustrated novels; arts and crafts [dolls, ceramic tea sets, and fashion], and scholarly essays. Linda Cassady and her husband, George Cassady, MD, gifted a Lewis Carroll Collection to the University of Southern California in 2000. Her area of "collecting” Carroll is as a sponsor and judge of the Wonderland Award, an annual multidisciplinary competition that encourages new scholarship and creative work related to Lewis Carroll. From the Prohibition through the Second Big War, the glory days of Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington are being recaptured humbly and with humor in San Diego by four musicians who know it don’t mean a thing without that swing: Beston Barnett - Guitar, Vocals Pete Miesner - Guitar, Lead Vocals Matt Gill - Clarinet Paul Hormick - Upright Bass The Zzymzzy Quartet takes its name from a hypothetical “last word” in the dictionary: thus, their tagline, “The Last Word in Gypsy Swing.” The “Gypsy” sound is heard in much of the guitar work, heavily influenced by the stylings of French Gypsy jazz legend Django Reinhardt, but the group also pays tribute to the Swing Era with classic standards and idiomatic originals. Since the Zzymzzy Quartet came together in 2004, they’ve played dances, parties, weddings, festivals, art openings, and events throughout Southern California to unanimous enthusiasm, carving out a name for themselves as a tasty dance band and a classy addition to every wedding. In 2017, ART HURTS Records released their second CD, "Petite Fleur" which, on top of inspired playing and elegant arrangements, features cameos from a variety of beloved San Diego musicians. Create a professional arm-rod-and-mouth puppet of your very own from Rene Rubalcava, owner and puppeteer of LV Puppet Studio of Las Vegas who learned the art of puppet making from a Jim Henson Muppeteer. There’s no better time to create your own one-of-a-kind fuzzy monster! In this workshop, we guide you from start to finish as you select, cut, hot glue and assemble the pieces and personality of your own customized puppet. No sewing is required in this workshop. Students bring their puppets to life with their own unique interests and imaginations, and by choice and placement of different face details. Each one is unique!
