About this event The Space Lady A living outsider music legend, The Space Lady began her odyssey on the streets of Boston in the late 1970s (and in San Francisco a decade later), playing versions of contemporary pop music on a dilapidated old accordion found in a junk store. Following the theft and destruction of her accordion, Susan invested in a Casio keyboard with a phase shifter and headset mike, bringing a new and otherworldly element to pop music in interpretations that have captured imaginations worldwide. Shimmering with dulcet harp tones and dreamy electronics, her debut EP Spells was released by LA’s acclaimed Leaving Records in May 2020 and described by Rolling Stone as “one of the best recent releases of its kind.” Nailah was born in Manhattan and raised in LA - the daughter of a Belizean pastor - playing drums and acoustic guitar in her dad’s church band and singing in its choir. As a teenager, her growing interest in classical and jazz artists like Erik Satie, Alice Coltrane, and the soundtracks of Miyazaki films began to crystallise into the delicately ethereal musicality that led her to composing the songs on Spells. From the KPBS weekend arts preview: An all-ages music festival at the library — sounds super wholesome, right? Stay Strange is an experimental noise art and music collective, and if your idea of "wholesome" is dark and very loud, this is the show for you. Noise art takes some getting used to, but there's a joy to be found in pushing boundaries, whether from experimenting with electronics, sound and gear or just plain old, ear-busting screaming. Artists like Quadra, Dark Friends, Christian Hell, Kole Galbraith and more will perform, and in the courtyard, there'll be art and zines from a bunch of vendors, including San Diego Zine Fest. —Julia Dixon Evans, KPBS From the organizers: Stay Strange, San Diego’s exclusive noise-music collective, will once again curate Checked Out: An Experimental Music and Art Festival at the downtown Central Library on Saturday, October 15. We’ve gathered an incredible roster of musicians that push the boundaries of mainstream music, creating a new style of sound that is innovative, progressive, and daring. We will commence the music program of Checked Out: An Experimental Music and Art Festival in the Neil Morgan Auditorium at 12:30PM. This program will run until 5:00PM. Thanks to the library, Checked Out: An Experimental Music and Art Festival is free. This is also an all-ages event. First two hours of parking are free with validation. In addition to the adventurous music program in the auditorium we will have an equally exciting array of artists set up in the library courtyard. There you will find artists of all classifications vending art prints, homemade t-shirts, painting, fanzines, toys and more. There will be something for everyone.
