In this 2.5-hour introductory workshop, students are provided with a wooden spoon blank to power carve. The instructor will cover safety, basic carving techniques, and spoon design fundamentals. Functional and decorative spoons are fun to use and display! The instructor will share her tips on achieving beautiful curves within a design. This workshop is designed to teach you how to safely craft your own spoon through power carving. Material fee: $5 payable to the instructor at the start of the workshop. This is an introductory workshop in Power Carving. Another intro class offered is Intro to Power Carving | Sculptural Art. Once an intro class has been taken, students are invited to explore Intermediate Power Carving with Intermediate Power Carving | Carving a Bowl. This class is appropriate for ages 18 and older. Heroes and Monsters (Ages 6 – 7) July 7 – 11, 8:30 a.m. – 3 p.m. What would your artful superpower be? Get ready to team up with your friends and MCASD educators in an awesome showdown for the fate of the museum–an art collision between Heroes and Monsters. Spend the week designing your own Hero and Monster inspired by the Museum's collection: Learn how to use art for good by developing your own art superpowers. Create a persona by dawning masks and capes influenced by Nick Cave. Use John Baldessari's conceptual powers to fight "Boring Art." Schedule Day 1: Start the week by imagining your superhero, or good-monster alter-ego, and its artful superpowers! Then, create your helmet. Day 2: Make your shield and cape and create dice to guide your way. Learn to create these stunning pieces of art that intertwine Japanese culture and the changing of the seasons. By end of the semester, you will have learned to design beautiful and professional looking arrangements for both everyday and special occasions.
