When Lilian Rice was working as a teacher she taught a young Lloyd Ruocco. He then worked with her when she was designing the new town of Rancho Santa Fe. Ruocco went on to become the central figure in the San Diego modernist scene. One of the young architects in his orbit was Frederick Liebhardt. He was one of several of the apprentices of Frank Lloyd Wright who made such an impact in the region after the war. About the presenters: Presenters include Dr. Mark Hargreaves, Rector of St. James-by-the-Sea in La Jolla, Hallie Swenson an architectural designer in San Diego, Keith York, an architectural writer and real estate agent specializing in architect designed homes, and independent curator Dave Hampton. Hargreaves, author of The Sacred Architecture of Irving J. Gill. (2023), was inspired by a lifelong interest in the visual arts to complete a master's degree at The National Gallery and King's College in London on the topic of Christianity and the arts. Since moving to San Diego, he has had a keen interest in capturing the architectural history of San Diego. Hallie Swenson studied traditional architecture and urbanism in England at University of Buckingham, the architectural history of England at the University of Cambridge, King's College, and Roman architecture at the University of Notre Dame, Rome. She contributed an essay to Clive Aslet’s book The Academy, which celebrates the work of renowned traditionalist architect John Simpson. Billy Galewood is an American singer, songwriter, and rapper from Cleveland who ended up in California, where he continued to hone his eclectic acoustic/hip-hop sound. His shows blend hip-hop, acoustic rock, funk, improvisation, and comedy. Multi-instrumentalist-composer Tom Griesgraber is known for many roles, including behind the scenes, in the music industry, but the Berklee College of Music graduate is best known onstage for his mastery of the unusual Chapman Stick. The relatively narrow instrument produces music that to the uninitiated listener sounds like an ensemble. Those who have seen Griesgraber perform live, however, know that the sonorous music produced comes from the magic of a unique virtuoso. A seasoned guitar player of 30 years, Stephen Bulman specializes in percussive fingerstyle music. Known for his distinctive use of harmonics and pitch bending, his tranquil compositions create a soothing auditory experience.
