Shenel Johns is a dynamic jazz musician whose captivating stage presence and impressive vocal range are rooted in her early exposure to reggae and gospel. A graduate of the Hartt School, where she received mentorship from Jackie McLean’s esteemed alumni, Johns passionately shares her musical gifts globally, mentoring young artists and performing in residencies from Shanghai to Mexico. Winner of the Riga Jazz Stage Vocal Competition, she has collaborated with jazz luminaries like Wynton Marsalis and Damien Sneed, seamlessly blending traditional gospel, jazz, and diasporic influences in renowned venues and festivals worldwide, including recent performances with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and in tribute to Max Roach. The program Artist Statement 101 focuses on strategies for writing a dynamic general artist statement. With a combination of presentation and group conversation led by curator and writer Elizabeth Rooklidge, participants will come away from the session with a concrete plan for writing a statement, as well as a store of generative techniques to use now and throughout the future. The best writing comes from writing what you know, and based on Joel Rafael’s life experiences and over fifty years of making music, he has a deep well from which to draw. He has chronicled his life and the world around him with passionate songwriting rooted in the folk tradition. Joel began performing in showcases and small clubs around Southern California in the early 1970s. In 1981, he toured with Jesse Colin Young, and released his debut album, "Dharma Bums." Joel won Kerrville’s new folk award in 1995 and gained national airplay with the seminal Joel Rafael Band. He composed and performed all original music for the LA Theatre Works production of "The Grapes of Wrath" in 2002 and toured the southwest with Joan Baez in 2003. No influence is more obvious in his work than that of Woody Guthrie, with whom he shares five co-writes, and Joel has been a featured performer at the Woody Guthrie Folk Festival for all twenty-seven years. Rupert Wates is a London-born, award-winning songwriter who signed an exclusive publishing deal with Eaton Music in the late 1990s and has been writing full-time ever since. Since relocating to the United States in 2006, he has released eleven acclaimed full-length albums, earning airplay across the United States, Canada, Europe, Israel, and Australia. His work has inspired over fifty songwriting awards and more than twenty cover recordings by other artists, including two full tribute albums recorded in Nashville and Los Angeles. Performing an average of 120 shows a year across North America and Europe, Rupert continues to captivate audiences with his haunting, melodic brand of acoustic art-folk. Famed for his attacking, take-no-prisoners playing style, Cuban-born pianist and composer Alfredo Rodriguez has a back story that has become the stuff of legend: the kid who, without constant access to a piano, practiced on scales he’d painted on the family dinner table; who, aged 19, represented Cuba in the International Solo Piano Competition at the 2016 Montreux Jazz Festival, just happening to entertain a crowd that included Quincy Jones, who was so bowled over he encouraged his permanent relocation from embargoed Cuba to America. GRAMMY-nominated, the veteran of an NPR Tiny Desk concert, the recipient of critical praise including comparisons to early Bill Evans and Art Tatum, Rodriguez now sounds distinctively like himself. Learn to make a Sweeper! Sunday, October 19, from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. In this 3-hour workshop, students will learn to make a long handled broom with traditional broomcorn. Taught by local artist-educator AB, the class is kept simple to minimize any difficulty in creating the sweeper broom. Be ready to be challenged with your craft skill. This will be a fun and interactive broom class that will take you into the creative culture of besoms. We will prepare the handle, attach the broomcorn, shape the broom head/bristles and stitch it together with needle and thread/cord. By the end of the class you will have a functional and artistic broom to take home with you. You’ll also have the opportunity to scent the broom as well as decorate the sweeper. It is helpful if you’ve already taken Hand Broom Making Workshop, but it’s not required. Ages 13+ years and up is recommended.
