Learn to make a Sweeper! Sunday, October 19, from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. In this 3-hour workshop, students will learn to make a long handled broom with traditional broomcorn. Taught by local artist-educator AB, the class is kept simple to minimize any difficulty in creating the sweeper broom. Be ready to be challenged with your craft skill. This will be a fun and interactive broom class that will take you into the creative culture of besoms. We will prepare the handle, attach the broomcorn, shape the broom head/bristles and stitch it together with needle and thread/cord. By the end of the class you will have a functional and artistic broom to take home with you. You’ll also have the opportunity to scent the broom as well as decorate the sweeper. It is helpful if you’ve already taken Hand Broom Making Workshop, but it’s not required. Ages 13+ years and up is recommended. This Disability Pride Month, join interdisciplinary artist duo Sensory Dimensions (Casey Hall-Landers & Elicia Neo) for the premiere of "My Body's Wake", a FREE multimedia experience at the City Heights Performance Annex. Through a visceral blend of body painting, live improvisational dance and violin, projection, and generative sound, "My Body's Wake" navigates the emotional terrains of grief, isolation, anger, and care - rooted in the artists' experience with chronic pain and dynamic disability. "Sensory Dimensions" depicts the experiences of disabled people with chronic illness and pain by immersing audiences in multi-sensory environments using a diverse range of artistic modalities to create accessible live art events. Founded by interdisciplinary dancer Casey Hall-Landers and multimedia violinist Elicia Neo through the Berklee NYC Masters program in Creative Media and Technology, the duo is fueled by a passion to create safe and welcoming spaces for all. "Sensory Dimensions" explores and recontextualizes pain through sensory and artistic pathways, using nature as a mirror to understand our bodies and integrating accessible design into their creative work. From August 1-3, Old Town’s iconic Bazaar del Mundo Shops will present its Latin American Market, transforming its courtyard into a small marketplace with genuine folk art, handwoven textiles, stunning jewelry and meticulously crafted ceramic and clay pottery made by “The Best of the Best.” This is an opportunity for guests to take a timeless piece of culture, tradition and history home, and enjoy live demonstrations, Latin guitar serenades and award-winning Mexican cuisine from neighboring Casa Guadalajara. Pieces include Turina’s shimmering "Ciclo Plateresco," Jennifer Higdon’s mesmerizing "Pale Yellow," Aaron Alter’s contemplative "Introspective Blues #1," Andrés Martín’s powerful "Synchronicity". The title piece, Miguel del Águila’s "Submerged" (for flute, cello, and harp), is inspired by Alfonsina Storni's poetry, and it celebrates her life, evoking the quiet, creative depths where artists retreat to dream, reflect, and begin anew. The program culminates in a powerful finale: the unveiling of Hugo Crosthwaite’s 2025 Camarada art commission, inspired by Andrés Martín’s "Tango Bajo el Agua," which will be performed alongside the artwork. This deeply personal piece explores the dual nature of water as both life-giving and potentially destructive. Martín invites us to consider a striking metaphor: if we can learn to tango underwater, we can find beauty even in the most unlikely or challenging places.
