  • The first Hong Kong On Screen Film Festival showcases four movies, covering contemporary Hong Kong cinema as well as classics from the 90s. While the small selection does not do justice to the variety in Hong Kong movies, we tried to include the main genres in this film festival. Together they paint a picture of Hong Kong cinema from its heydays to the latest rebound. On May 12 The Sparring Partner: 7:30 p.m. Based on an actual homicide case about the bloody murder of a couple by their son, much of this movie is a courtroom drama on how the jury determines whether the intelligent suspect and his naïve accomplice are guilty. Winner of Best New Director and Best Editing at the 2023 Hong Kong Film Awards On May 13 The Heroic Trio: 3:30 p.m. A sci-fi action movie on how a trio of heroines save the newborn babies in a city against a mysterious villain. Starring Michelle Yeoh (Best Actress at the 95th Academy Awards) and Maggie Cheung (Best Actress at Berlin and Cannes Film Festivals) Far Far Away: 5:25 p.m. A computer nerd dates one attractive woman after another. The only problem is that they all live in remote corners of Hong Kong. This love comedy also presents the beautiful landscape of the outskirts of Hong Kong rarely seen in other movies. Happy Together: 7:45 p.m. A drama about the turbulent relationship between 2 Hong Kongers living in Argentina. This film is regarded as one of the best LGBT movies and won the Best Director award (world acclaimed Wong Kar-Wai) at the 1997 Cannes Film Festival. All movies are in Cantonese with Chinese and English subtitles. For more information please visit: hkonscreen.org
