Hi Friends, You might have heard—last year, we hosted our first-ever live event, and we're excited to share it with you! Our Port of Entry Live event was part of the World Design Experience, linked to San Diego–Tijuana's 2024 World Design Capital initiative. The event joined a larger lineup of exhibitions, talks, art shows, installations, and workshops held throughout San Diego and Tijuana to showcase our area's creative talent. Today's episode contains part 1 of the unedited recording of that live event, presented in two parts. It’s part of a larger five-episode bundle, including our recent podcast episode "Charles and Giancarlo - Compadres in Art," and two short video capsules: Charles' Dream and Giancarlo's Dance. San Diego Black Arts & Culture District Music Festival Saturday, June 28, 2025 Gates Open: noon – 8 p.m. Martin Luther King Jr. Park 6401 Skyline Drive, San Diego, CA 92114 (Festival takes place on the 65th Street side of the park) Free and open to the public | Family-friendly | All ages welcome The San Diego Black Arts & Culture District Music Festival returns on Saturday, June 28, 2025, for a full day of live music, cultural exhibits, family activities, and community celebration. Held at Martin Luther King Jr. Park in the heart of Southeast San Diego, this free event honors the depth and diversity of Black artistic expression. Curated by Artistic Director Kamau Kenyatta and hosted by Dominic Malone, the festival features an exciting lineup of live performances. The music begins at noon with an opening set from Miki Vale, followed by performances starting at 1:45 p.m. in the following order: Miki Vale, C.C. Carter, Daneen Wilburn, Lenny “Fuzzy” Rankins, and Ben Williams. All-day activities include a STEAM Tent hosted by the Elementary Institute of Science, an African Artifacts Exhibit presented by San Diego Mesa College, and a sneak peek at “We Stand on Their Shoulders,” an augmented reality exhibit presented by the San Diego African American Museum of Fine Art. A wide range of food and non-food vendors will also be available throughout the day. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets and enjoy a full day of music, culture, and community connection. This event is a celebration of Black creativity, heritage, and unity. What is an Intimacy Speakeasy? A safe, fun space to learn how to "speak easier" about intimacy. By intimacy, I mean the emotional, mental, and physical parts of our relationships that are often the hardest to talk about. What to Expect: A gathering with teaching, small-group conversations, spot-coaching, and fun — all inside an actual speakeasy in Pacific Beach. The event is 5-7 p.m., but you are free to stay on and enjoy the Captain’s Quarters speakeasy (which also has food). Your Host: Dr. Jenn Gunsaullus is a sociologist, intimacy speaker, relationship coach, and author who has been leading conversations around intimacy for more than 30 years. Fee: First drink is free! The San Diego Branch of the Sogetsu School of Ikebana presents its 35th Anniversary Exhibition where you will see beautiful Japanese floral arrangements. There is an exhibition each day at 2 p.m. Also for sale will be gently used vases, Ikebana tools, calendars, aprons, and other related items at much reduced prices.

7th ANNUAL HALLOWEEN IN LA MESA VILLAGE Trick-or-Treating - Pet Costume Contest & More Friday, October 31, 2025 from 4 – 6 p.m. WHAT: The La Mesa Village Association (LMVA) invites the community to take part in their 7th Annual Halloween in La Mesa Village event that features family-friendly trick-or-treating in downtown La Mesa. Dress up in costume and bring your trick-or-treat bag to collect goodies from participating businesses who will be handing out treats along La Mesa Blvd. and adjoining streets. There will also be fun, Halloween-themed stilt walkers cruising up and down La Mesa Blvd. (both sides of Spring Street) interacting with everyone – perfect for a selfie! We will also have a DJ playing fun tunes by the Fountain Courtyard near the La Mesa Blvd. Trolley Stop, as well as a Balloon Artist. The La Mesa First United Methodist Church will host a free “spooky” organ concert at 4:30 p.m. playing a variety of Halloween-themed tunes. The church is located at 4690 Palm Ave. (corner of Palm Ave./Lemon Ave.). Guests can also enjoy spooktacular decorations at a variety of businesses, including our La Mesa Village Farmers Market vendors who will deck out their booths for the event. The Farmers Market will be taking place during the trick-or-treat event and add a fun element to the Halloween festivities! Additionally, Team Z Realty will feature a free selfie booth with an over-the-top theme – this year is “KPop Demon Hunters”! The Howl-o-Ween Pet Costume Contest will take place at the Fountain Courtyard area next to the La Mesa Blvd. Trolley Station located at Spring St. and La Mesa Blvd. The Pet Costume Contest will feature three categories for pet owners to dress up their pet(s), including Scariest, Cutest, and Best Pet/Pet Parent Combo. Prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in each category. Participants can start checking in at 5 pm and judging will begin at 5:30 p.m. Shops and restaurants will also be open for business and visitors are encouraged to explore the variety of stores and eateries available while you are here for the festivities!
