Kids explore sculpture through fun craft mediums! Monday through Friday June 9 – 13 from 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. Ages 7-12 years welcome! This week of Summer Camp is all about sculpting with a variety of fun traditional materials & mediums! Kids will explore sculpture through planning, designing and creating: masks with paper maché, wooden sculptures, tiny pottery with ceramic wheel throwing, clay handbuilding and more! It’s a fun week of hands-on learning focusing on three-dimensional design with creativity and skill-building with a variety of instructor-artists at the Craft Collective Studio! This camp is recommended for kids ages 7-12 years. OPTIONAL | Lunch Hour Supervision If there is a camp ending as ours begins and you need your child transferred from another camp, let us know! If your child is signed up for morning and afternoon camps here at The Maac at Liberty Station (the building San Diego Craft Collective is located in–Dorothy Laub Music & Arts Center), we’re here to provide that space for your them. Kids explore cooking & crafts! Choose from the following dates: Mon-Fri, June 2 – 6 -or- July 7 – 11, from 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. Ages 7-12 years welcome! This week of Summer Camp is all about cooking with farm-to-table ingredients and an equal mix of fun, traditional handmaking & crafting! Is your child curious about where their food comes from? Does your child love to make crafts? This summer, open their world to exploring the bounty of local, colorful ingredients and how those foods got from the ground to our plates with local culinary arts instructors from Sticky Fingers Cooking. Did your child know that carrots can improve your eyesight, and cherries can help improve your memory? Young chefs will also learn what makes certain ingredients super healthy for the body and how delicious they can taste, while practicing basic cooking skills and techniques on their way to becoming super chefs! This is a unique opportunity to study with two accomplished and warmhearted artist-educators in the same course. Ken and Stephanie are both well known for their ability to help each person find their own unique drawing abilities. Each week there will be a life model. On day one, Ken will introduce a simplified approach to gesture drawing and the fundamentals of figure and head construction. During Weeks 2 and 3, Ken will go deeper into the importance of gesture drawing in relation to constructing and composing longer poses. During the final three weeks, Stephanie will continue to build on Ken’s lessons but will include longer poses that will allow students time to incorporate the basics into an actual process of drawing or painting more finished figures and portraits. Materials: You do not need to buy everything on this list. Only buy materials that relate to the medium you plan to work with, or if you are more advanced, bring your own supplies. On day one you will only need newsprint, a drawing board, vine charcoal, kneaded eraser, and one colored pastel for accents. Charcoal: Soft vine charcoal; 4B charcoal pencil; kneaded eraser; smooth newsprint; drawing board; rags or paper towels. If you prefer graphite: 2B, 4B, and 6B graphite pencils; kneaded eraser; 18” x 24” drawing pad or 18” x 24” smooth newsprint; drawing board. In this class, Jeff teaches how to efficiently begin and complete a painting. He says, “I focus on a purposeful approach to moving through blocking in an underpainting and understanding how to finish it without overworking. We try to work loose and quickly, so the process of painting is enjoyable.” Materials: Paint: (I like Winsor & Newton) Ultramarine Blue, Cadmium Yellow Light (or Pale Hue), Permanent Alizarin Crimson, Titanium White. Brushes: #2, #4, #6 (flats). I recommend Robert Simmons Signet brand. Supports: Canvas panels (buy bundle of five for the best price). For class we will be working in small format, 8” x 10” or 9” x 12”. (Please no larger than 12” x 16”.) Other: palette (disposable paper palette is fine); odorless mineral spirits in solvent tank or small tight lid jar; small metal palette knife. If you already have paint and this equipment or similar, perfect. Most important is that you have the four paint colors mentioned, especially Permanent Alizarin Crimson. Kids explore ceramics and woodworking! Mon through Fri | July 28 – Aug 1 | 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. Ages 7-12 years welcome! This week of Summer Camp is all about ceramics & woodworking for kids! Kids learn woodworking hand tool techniques from woodworking professional, Steffanie Dotson. A mom, woodworker, furniture maker, and Executive Director at San Diego Craft Collective, she teaches woodworking to both children and adults year-round. With a focus on safety, Steffanie creatively mentors children and fosters confidence through woodworking. Kids will also explore ceramics with visual artist-educator, Lydia Kardos. Each camper will learn and practice ceramic hand building techniques to make fun, long-lasting projects in this traditional medium full of creative flexibility. This camp is for kids, ages 7-12 years. Projects and depth of learning are matched up to the children’s age/ability.
