The only place to begin a discussion of modernism in San Diego is with Irving J. Gill. But what was his legacy? Were all his progressive ideas lost amidst the fashion for Spanish revivalism? We will look at the work of Gill’s protégé Richard Requa in a new light and see how he provides a link with the architects of the midcentury. The lecture will conclude with an examination of San Diego’s rogue architect, William Kesling. About the presenters: Presenters include Dr. Mark Hargreaves, Rector of St. James-by-the-Sea in La Jolla, Hallie Swenson an architectural designer in San Diego, Keith York, an architectural writer and real estate agent specializing in architect designed homes, and independent curator Dave Hampton. Hargreaves, author of The Sacred Architecture of Irving J. Gill. (2023), was inspired by a lifelong interest in the visual arts to complete a master's degree at The National Gallery and King's College in London on the topic of Christianity and the arts. Since moving to San Diego, he has had a keen interest in capturing the architectural history of San Diego. Hallie Swenson studied traditional architecture and urbanism in England at University of Buckingham, the architectural history of England at the University of Cambridge, King's College, and Roman architecture at the University of Notre Dame, Rome. She contributed an essay to Clive Aslet’s book The Academy, which celebrates the work of renowned traditionalist architect John Simpson. In this 2-hour workshop, you’ll learn the art of relief printing! Students will learn to design and carve their own linoleum stamp and block print an image onto fabric. We invite you to upcycle fabric from your own wardrobe or home for this class, so grab a well-loved favorite item or something that could use a fun refresh and begin imagining some fun designs you might carve and print! Because this class focuses on upcycling, please bring your own fabric to block print on. This can be clothing, a tote bag or something else. You may bring more than one item and the instructor can help you choose which to print on in class. We recommend you avoid fabrics that are especially thin, like satins and silks. The City of Carlsbad’s popular EGGstravaganza Spring Festival returns. This annual spring event features Carlsbad’s largest egg hunt, an ongoing egg scramble where kids race to collect candy-filled eggs. Don't forget to bring your basket! Face-painting, crafts, cookie decorating, a fun zone, soak the bunny and more. Food and beverages are available for purchase. Activity cards and wristbands can be purchased in advance or at the event to enjoy the activities and fun zone. No registration is needed to attend this event. How the egg scramble works The egg scramble is ongoing from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. or until eggs run out. To keep the scramble fun for all ages, one field will be designated for children ages 6 and over who want to race for their eggs, and an identical one will be for children ages 5 and under. There is also a noncompetitive field for young children, children with special needs, and for families wanting to pose for a photo opportunity. To avoid lines during the event, $8 activity cards and $8 unlimited inflatables wristbands can be purchased in advance at city community centers. The cards can be divided among multiple children for all the activities; however, wristbands are per person.
