In the fall of 2022, the Humanities Center commenced an ambitious three-year exploration of the connection between the human imagination and the diverse array of landscapes in our world. In the first three parts of this series, we focused on the ocean, the desert and the forest. This semester, we investigate the frozen realms — the wintry worlds of icefields, ice plateaus, glaciers and polar landscapes. Aspects of these strange and dreamlike environments will be showcased in our gallery exhibitions, while in a wide-ranging series of panel discussions and presentations, scholars from a diverse array of disciplines will reflect upon the qualities and the evocative appeal of the earth’s icy regions. American Mother takes us deep into the story of Diane Foley, whose son Jim, a freelance journalist, was held captive by ISIS before being beheaded in the Syrian desert-the video shared online for all the world to see. In American Mother; Diane’s voice is channeled into searing reality by National Book Award winning author Colum McCann, who brings us on a journey of strength, resilience, and radical empathy. McCann will be in conversation with Avi Spiegel, PhD, JD, associate professor of political science and international relations. Colum McCann has received some of the world's most prestigious literary awards and honors, including the U.S National Book Award, the International Dublin Literary Prize, a Chevalier des Arts et Lettres from the French government, election to the Irish arts academy, several European awards, the 2010 Best Foreign Novel Award in China, and an Oscar nomination. His novels TransAtlantic (2013) and Apeirogon (2020) were longlisted for the Man Booker Prize. In 2017 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts.
