In this workshop, students will learn the art of editing their memoir including identifying what and where to cut to streamline the plot. Students will also learn how the revising process works so that they will be able to create a product that will excel in the marketplace. Peer editing will be utilized to assist the student in completing a first rough draft of their memoir. Students will be given an overview of the publishing options available to them including special guests (top professionals in the field) that will offer the most current and compelling information about publishing/self-publishing in today’s memoir marketplace. Working with a life model, students will learn to identify and depict the core “gesture” of any pose. Emphasis is on short poses with the goal of increasing our ability to capture the body in motion. By focusing on the “verb” of the pose, and not the “noun,” we will explore the storytelling potential of the figure. This is an excellent class for those interested in animation and the entertainment arts or for anyone looking to inject more dynamism into their life-drawing practice. The Blazing Laptops Write-a-thon is THE big annual fundraiser for San Diego Writers, Ink (SDWI). On June 22, 2025, writers will write in person at Lestat’s Hillcrest from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Writers seek pledges from sponsors to help raise money for San Diego’s favorite literary arts organization. About Lori Bell Brooklyn native Lori Bell is a flutist and composer of admirable depth and broad musical sympathies. She has contributed to the development of higher standards of performance while earning acclaim from both peers and critics for her artistry on stage and in recordings. She is a three-time Global Music Award recipient recognized for her recordings, compositions, and arrangements. In 2016, Lori paid heartfelt tribute to her family and birthplace on her critically acclaimed album Brooklyn Dreaming, her 10th CD, earning four-star ratings from Jazz Journal UK, Jazz Times, the Los Angeles Times, and Downbeat Magazine, which chose it as “Best Albums of 2016.” Huffington Post also chose Brooklyn Dreaming for their “Best of Jazz 2016”. Veteran jazz critic Scott Yanow chose it as one of his Top 25 Best Jazz CDs of 2016. It also won a Global Music Award for Outstanding Achievement for compositions and arrangements. Lori has toured in Asia, including Singapore and Hong Kong. She has also performed in high-profile ensemble settings at The Kennedy Center in Washington, DC, SOKA Performing Arts Center, The Wadsworth Theatre at UCLA, and most recently, on a project of jazz arrangements and classical compositions for the Los Angeles Philharmonic Music Library. She has performed three times at the Gala for the National Flute Association, most recently in 2016. In addition to her global renown as a performer and recording artist, Lori is a respected force in music education. She is currently on the SDSU faculty as an Instructor of Flute and studio teacher and over the years, has privately taught hundreds of students of all ages in both classical flute technique and jazz styling, jazz piano (her secondary instrument), theory, composition and arranging at her studio in San Diego. Ahoy, matey! The nautical-clad “Titans of Soft Rock,” Yachtley Crew, will be dropping anchor in San Diego this July to launch ArtPower’s summer season. For the uninitiated, Yacht Rock is a revival of the smooth soft rock and Top 40 hits from the late ’70s to early ’80s—now a nationwide sensation. Fans don captain’s hats and nautical attire, singing along to the era’s breezy, feel-good tunes. Yachtley Crew first made waves in 2017, selling out countless Southern California venues before igniting a nationwide Yacht Rock craze. Their success caught the attention of the legendary Jimmy Buffett, who signed them to his Mailboat label before their recent deal with Earache/Universal Records. Yachtley Crew on Instagram / Youtube

From one of the first woman photographers, Anna Atkins, to lifestyle icon, DIY celebrity Martha Stewart—the Cyanotype Photographic Process continues to fascinate us with its beautiful tones of Prussian Blue colors, by the contact printing of objects (photograms), to using today’s digital negatives. This light sensitive process, activated by the ultraviolet rays of the sun and discovered by Sir John Herschel in 1842, has experienced several revivals since the 19th century. First in the 20th century with its rediscovery as an alternative process within university curricula worldwide to this last turn of century, in the 2000s, creating a revolt by fine art photographers in response to the onslaught of technology and its pesky pixel. In this two-day intensive workshop, we will push the process further by cyanotype printing on fabric, including the latest technique of exposing wet cyanotypes. We will be introduced to the basic procedures using commercially coated fabrics, then move quickly to hand-applied emulsions on various fabrics from cotton to silk. By embedding the photographic image within the “ply-ability” of fabric, we can explore finishing strategies for the image, from sewing, embroidering, quilting, and garment making to creating sculptural forms with the photograph on fabric. Materials: Materials provided with a $40 fee paid to instructor on the first day of class include chemistry and a contact printing frame. Please join Rebecca Sue Holladay in celebrating Kolibri's new gym/workout space, while also showcasing artworks by talented local artists. "Exercise is a way we express ourselves with our bodies; someone who creates art on canvas is also expressing themselves. To me life is about emotional expression and having a safe space to embody that. So I wanted to join these two elements together to create a space of safety and community." Art includes works from emerging artists in the North County, including 13 recent mixed media paintings by Laurie Batter of Carlsbad. Fresh, delicious appetizers by Savory Moment will be served. The Grand Opening is Saturday, April 19, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Enter from The Poinsettia Station parking lot. Batter, one of the featured artists, says she was always creating art as a child and teenager. She had good fortune to be born into a family who encouraged her creativity, and a grade school program that exposed her to the Masters and a college degree in Art History. After a 40-year hiatus from art while she ran her boutique PR & Marketing firm, and the surprise blessing of the Pandemic, she has renewed her connection to art, creating through multiple mediums and subjects. Her home studio is chock full of colorful paints, and every art supply you could dream about. She actively explores her creativity through classes at Mira Costa College, plus several renowned workshops including Nicholas Wilton’s Art2Life Creative Visioning Program (CVP), Art2Life Spark, and Jenny Nelson. Laurie is a member of AGNC (Artist Group of North County) and the Oceanside Museum of Art Artist Alliance. Her work is focused mostly on small stories about humanity that touch the human soul. In this talk, Youngmin delves into the rich tradition and history of bojagi, Korean wrapping cloths, and the enduring practice of creating them. In Korean culture, bojagi are believed to wrap not only objects but also bok—good fortune or happiness. Youngmin will share her personal creative journey and pursuit of happiness, which have connected her to a broader creative community. Through her work, she will discuss how she inspires and educates, helping to ensure that the art of bojagi continues to thrive for future generations. Youngmin Lee is a textile artist specializing in the traditional Korean art of bojagi. Since relocating from South Korea to California in 1996, she has dedicated herself to preserving and innovating within this tradition, which emphasizes sustainability through recycling and upcycling fabric remnants. In 2024, Youngmin published "Bojagi: The Art of Korean Textiles," a book that delves into the beauty and history of bojagi. She also founded the Korean Textile Tour in 2017, creating a platform to introduce a broader audience to Korean traditional textile arts and culture. Copies of "Bojagi: The Art of Korean Textiles" are available for sale in Shop Mingei, and a book signing will take place directly after the talk.
