A curated evening of live dance, AAPI dance makers present works that tell stories of “Becoming Asian American”. This year's invited choreographers work primarily in modern and contemporary dance forms. Each come from different cultural backgrounds and are inspirational and accomplished artists in their own right. Together, they will present an evening of profound sharing and deep questioning. We hope audiences will come away with a richer understanding and appreciation of our AAPI communities and identities. This month’s art activity will be inspired by Nicholas Kontaxis and his colorful paintings. We invite guests to view his work in the exhibition and find inspiration for their own multi-media collage. Zamrock, the Afro-rock genre that swept southern Africa in the 1970s, was born in the Copperbelt region of northern Zambia, and WITCH was at the center of it all. In the beginning, lead singer Emmanuel 'Jagari' Chanda and the band looked for a name to match edgy rock sounds coming from Europe and America. First they tried Kingston Market, which sounded too reggae-ish, then they tried Footswitch, but there was a local artist called Dr Footswitch, so they shortened it to Switch, and then finally WITCH. "The posters were handwritten," Jagari recalled, "so we would draw somebody on a broomstick." Hot out of the gate, WITCH signed to Teal Records and began touring in a truck with a canopy emblazoned with the words: "Trespassers will be eaten" The graphic artist who wrote those words also gave the band its enduring acronym: We Intend To Cause Havoc. Jagari recalls, "There was no hesitation. Everyone agreed" And the rest is history. Art Within Social Movements: Integrating Art & Ethnic Studies This professional development session explores the powerful role visual art has played in advancing social movements throughout history, equipping educators with resources, examples, and art projects that align with the Ethnic Studies Model Curriculum theme of Social Movements and Equity. Participants will examine how art has amplified the voices of advocates and driven social change, analyzing both historical and contemporary examples. Designed for all educators, not just art teachers, this session provides adaptable lesson plans and classroom-ready projects that support Ethnic Studies Learning Outcomes across various subjects. Educators will leave with practical tools, meaningful connections, and strategies to inspire student engagement with themes of equity and justice. All content is aligned with the National Core Arts Standards, ensuring a seamless integration of art into diverse educational contexts. Join us for Studio Arts, when OMA transforms into an artist’s studio, offering skill-building workshops led by distinguished professor and arts educator Robin Douglas. “Expansive Paintings” Using huge painting tools including brooms, mops, sponges and scrapers loose and dynamic large-format paintings will be created on the floor and table tops. Multi-layered colors will be used to create a soak-and-stain effect on loose canvases. A break for lunch and a relaxed discussion will occur at midday.
