"General Dynamics" — Solo Exhibition by Weston Riffle Opens at Poway Center for the Performing Arts A solo exhibition of new and selected works by California painter Weston Riffle, will open June 2, 2025 and run through July 1, 2025 at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts. Known for his vivid portrayals of rural California life and unflinching social commentary, Riffle brings a powerful and introspective body of work to North County San Diego. Born in La Mesa in 1970 and raised on a farm in Ramona, Weston Riffle is a product of the land he paints. His academic roots lie at San Diego State University (B.A., 1993) and San Jose State University (M.A., 1996), but he is largely self-taught—an “anti-artist,” in his own words. His unique voice blends deeply personal memory with socio-political undertones, capturing the spirit of California’s agricultural and working-class landscapes. "I wish to express simple purity in desire, action, and hope, of the people and places I have known," says Riffle. "Usually complex beginnings end in simple composition. A fatalistic view seems to be the result.” The exhibition title, "General Dynamics," references the tension between individual identity and the overwhelming machinery of modern systems—economic, social, and existential. In these paintings, brightly rendered scenes of farm workers, fishermen, and rural settings unfold in layered narratives that hint at both celebration and critique. As art gallery director, Deborah M. Williams notes, “It is as if the farm workers in their anonymity are just so many interchangeable parts in a larger machine… The political makes itself known through the personal.” Riffle’s work has been featured in galleries and museums across California for over 20 years, including the Oceanside Museum of Art, National Steinbeck Museum in Salinas, Borrego Art Institute and William D. Cannon Art Gallery. His pieces are held in both public and private collections and will also be the subject of an upcoming solo show at the Santa Paula Art Museum in 2028. Weston maintains art studios in San Diego’s Liberty Station-Arts District and in Idyllwild, CA. and splits his time between the two locations. More of his work can be viewed at Carruth Cellars (Liberty Station location) for the month of June 2025, his Liberty Station studio in Barracks 19, Golden Pine Gallery in Idyllwild and during Idyllwild Open Studios in July 2025. On Friday, July 25, Songwriter Sanctuary will host a special edition performance of its monthly series in celebration of Disability Pride Month featuring artists with lived experiences and/or deep ties to the disability community, including Espi Love, The Bella Lunas, and Miranda Ramos with Dylan Razwick. The event is hosted by the legendary Jeff Berkley in partnership with Normal Heights United. (4650 Mansfield St. Suggested Donation $10. All ages. But the problem isn’t disability itself; it’s the ableism (both overt and unintentional) baked into our spaces and systems. Through story and song, we’ll explore how access, care, and inclusion can create a better world for all of us - because anyone can become disabled at any time, and increased access is a lifelong practice! About the Artists Miranda Ramos: (accompanied by Dylan Razwick): Two-time 2024 Best of San Diego Winner in the categories of Best Country Musician & Singer/Songwriter and 2025 San Diego Music Award Nominee Miranda Ramos is a one of a kind artist who believes that a song isn't just sung, it must be performed. Drawing inspiration from her County and Rock roots, Miranda's songwriting is honest and relatable. She performs with her full band, as an acoustic duo or trio covering top 40 music and originals in the county genre with some pop, rock, and alternative hits thrown in (because why not?), and is the lead female vocalist in ALT2K San Diego's Premier Alt Rock Cover Band. The Bella Lunas: Kismet brought The Bella Lunas together in San Diego, California in 2022 and the vibrant trio immediately bonded over their love of music, creativity and American Sign Language. Rhea, a versatile singer-songwriter and ASL Interpreter, showcases her powerful, raw musical talent and exceptional vocals. Sheena, a CODA (Child of a Deaf Adult), brings her velvety vocals and passion for perfectly blended harmonies. Lily, a Deaf artist, wowed the other ladies with her unique ASL rhythmic renditions of visual music. Rhea and Sheena's voices and instruments blend together in angelic harmonies, weaving intricate patterns of sound that captivate audiences. Yet it is Lily, a Deaf artist and performer, who introduces a completely new dimension with American Sign Language. They are graceful together with the music as it creates a mesmerizing experience you can see, hear, and feel. Espi Love: Espi Love is a local poet who residing on traditional Kumeyaay land (San Diego, CA). They're also a vocalist, actress, model, and competitive dancer, and crochet artist. Espi believes in art as a form of not only creative expression but protest, resistance, whimsy in a world that tells us to leave our playfulness behind. A bold new theatrical experience is set to debut in San Diego offering audiences a chance to step back in time and into the shoes of one of the city’s most overlooked historical figures. "Thorn & Petal", an immersive, interactive stage production, tells the story of Louis Rose, a German-Jewish immigrant and visionary who helped shape the early identity of San Diego in the mid-1800s. "Thorn & Petal" is written and produced by Daniel Redman and directed by Dr. Katie B. Turner, Assistant Director of SDSU School of Theatre, Television, and Film, and founder of The Actor’s Place. It runs from September 12-21 at Trinity Theatre Company in the Mission Valley Mall. Before the 163, before the familiar skyline, there was a pioneer with a vision. Arriving in a nascent San Diego, Louis Rose wasn't just one of its earliest developers; he was its first identifiable Jewish settler, weaving his cultural thread into the fabric of a growing town. Witness his incredible story, from his arrival to the unexpected challenge that thrust him into the city's making. With a blend of humor, heart, and historical insight, "Thorn & Petal" is a celebration of community, resilience, and the joy of creation.
