  • In an era of rising political polarization and identity-driven conflict, how resistant is the United States to the threat of genocidal violence? What lessons can be drawn from societies that have experienced genocide—and how might deep-rooted cultural narratives around honor, rage, and revenge make even established democracies vulnerable? Join the San Diego World Affairs Council (SDWAC) and the SDSU Centers for Human Rights and War and Society for a vital conversation with Professor Alexander Hinton, a leading expert on genocide, cultural violence, and white power movements in the United States. Hinton is a Distinguished Professor of Anthropology, Director of the Center for the Study of Genocide and Human Rights, and UNESCO Chair on Genocide Prevention at Rutgers University. His recent book, "It Can Happen Here: White Power and the Rising Threat of Genocide in the US", explores how seemingly stable societies can spiral into violence. The discussion will be moderated by Grace Cheng, Founding Director of the Center for Human Rights at the College of Arts and Letters at San Diego State University. This event confronts difficult but necessary questions about the fragility of democracy, the power of ideology, and the warning signs we must not ignore. Free to the public, pre-registration required. Visit: https://sdwac.org/event-6263991 San Diego World Affairs Council on Instagram and Facebook

  • Join Museum educators for a special workshop inspired by the practice of sobremesa, cherished by artist Alfredo Castañeda. "Sobremesa" refers to the moments when a meal extends into lingering conversation, when guests talk, listen to music, and reflect on life and ideas. This workshop invites participants to gather in community, engage in both prompted and organic conversation, and take part in an art-making activity inspired by Castañeda’s work and practice. Poetry and storytelling, central to Castañeda’s sobremesas, will guide the flow of dialogue, sparking creativity and connection. The San Diego Museum of Art on Facebook / Instagram

On October 31, we will have Robert Wetzel on guitar, performing "Guitar Fantasy Through the Centuries." Robert Wetzel was born of Dutch and Indonesian lineage. He started playing piano at age eight, acoustic steel-string guitar and electric guitar at age eleven, and than he began serious study of the classical guitar at age fifteen which changed his life forever. In 1972, he began several years of private classical guitar studies with Spanish guitar virtuoso, Angel Romero, followed later by private guitar studies with guitar maestros Celedonio Romero, Pepe Romero and Celin Romero. He still considers himself a disciple of the Romero family of master guitarists, and often states, “the master-disciple relationship is a lifelong affair.” Wetzel frequently performs as a soloist and with orchestral and chamber music groups. He is also the founding member of the award-winning Odeum Guitar Duo, that was established in 1994 with his well-known guitarist duo colleague, Fred Benedetti. Their second Odeum Guitar Duo CD, entitled "Forgotten Romance", was officially chosen by NASA in 2016 to fly aboard the final flight of the United States Space Shuttle, THE ENDEAVOR, Mission STS-134, to the International Space Station launched on May 16, 2011, and the CD travelled there and back with additional orbits around the earth to complete mission objectives for a total of 6.5 million miles! Robert resides in San Diego County, where over the years he has been or presently is teaching the art of playing the guitar while on the musical faculties of Point Loma Nazarene University, University of California San Diego Extended Studies, SDSU, Cuyamaca College, Grossmont College, Southwestern College, Palomar College and Mesa College. He also teaches private guitar students online all over the world via video platforms.
