Cami Árboles is a multidisciplinary artist and movement educator born and raised in Los Angeles. She is a graduate of Yale University, where she studied and trained extensively in classical voice, opera, and live performance. Her background in vocal performance and physical theater deeply informs her current work, which explores the body as a site of ritual, resistance, and transformation. Árboles is the founder of Mind Body Spirit Collective (MBSC), an international movement platform centering pole dance, yoga, and somatic healing through community. Back by popular demand, this powerful exhibition features returning and new POC artists exploring Black history, culture, family, and community through their work. The evening also features the unveiling of "Miss Mary," an upright piano transformed by artist BJ Lane into a vibrant celebration of the performing arts. Part of the Oceanside Public Piano Project by the Oceanside Cultural Arts Foundation, "Miss Mary" will be accompanied by live music from pianist and OCAF VP Robert Parker. The Coronado Historical Association is delighted to host noted historian, author, and SDSU lecturer Richard Carrico for the final installment of the Fall 2025 Wine & Lecture Series. Mr. Carrico will be covering the buried history of San Diego's lost city: El Presidio Real de San Diego. Established in 1769 and abandoned by 1835, El Presidio was the first permanent European settlement on the Pacific coast and was the base for all the Spanish missions that spread throughout California. Come explore the history and hidden remnants of this National Historic Landmark through this fascinating lecture! He is a lecturer in the Department of American Indian Studies at San Diego State University and lives in Warner Springs. He is a well-respected scholar, public speaker, and researcher who has made significant contributions to our understanding of local Native American culture. His primary area of research is the Indian people of southern California and northern Mexico followed closely by the Spanish colonial period in San Diego County. Richard was recently presented with the prestigious Norman Neuerburg Award for Outstanding Contributions Towards the Study and Preservation of California’s Missions, Presidios, and Ranchos. In addition to more than 30 publications in professional journals, Richard is the author of an award-winning true crime book "Monsters on the Loose" (2024), "History of Wines and Wineries of San Diego County" (2016); Ramona and other books including the revised "Strangers in a Stolen Land: The Indians of San Diego County" (2018). Beyond the academic realm Richard has authored historically or archaeologically based articles for the San Diego Union, California Magazine, Ranch and Coast Magazine, San Diego Home & Garden, and other popular magazines. This exhibition will explore art that has emerged from the surf-culture lifestyle and surfing’s influence on artists. Everyone who has experienced the feeling of riding a wave understands just how hard it is to describe that incredible sensation, referred to as “stoke”. It seems that only through creative self-expression can surfer-artists capture the essence of stoke and the inspiration that can be found between the surfer and the wave. Artists who surf may take this creative energy in many directions and may explore subjects outside of surfing and surf culture. This joint exhibition will feature a variety of media, from traditional art making methods to works in resin, murals, surfboards, graphic art, sculpture, or fabric, all with the goal to convey the creative power that all artists experience, on or off the wave. It is a disciplined art form that breathes life into each composition, harmonizing the elements of nature and humanity. Learn to create these stunning pieces of art that intertwine Japanese culture and the changing of the seasons. By end of the semester, you will have learned to design beautiful and professional looking arrangements for both everyday and special occasions.
