On Friday, July 25, Songwriter Sanctuary will host a special edition performance of its monthly series in celebration of Disability Pride Month featuring artists with lived experiences and/or deep ties to the disability community, including Espi Love, The Bella Lunas, and Miranda Ramos with Dylan Razwick. The event is hosted by the legendary Jeff Berkley in partnership with Normal Heights United. (4650 Mansfield St. Suggested Donation $10. All ages. Doors 6:30 p.m., Music 7 p.m.) Disabled people are one of the largest, most diverse, and most excluded groups in our society. But the problem isn’t disability itself; it’s the ableism (both overt and unintentional) baked into our spaces and systems. Through story and song, we’ll explore how access, care, and inclusion can create a better world for all of us - because anyone can become disabled at any time, and increased access is a lifelong practice! About the Artists Miranda Ramos: (accompanied by Dylan Razwick): Two-time 2024 Best of San Diego Winner in the categories of Best Country Musician & Singer/Songwriter and 2025 San Diego Music Award Nominee Miranda Ramos is a one of a kind artist who believes that a song isn't just sung, it must be performed. Drawing inspiration from her County and Rock roots, Miranda's songwriting is honest and relatable. She performs with her full band, as an acoustic duo or trio covering top 40 music and originals in the county genre with some pop, rock, and alternative hits thrown in (because why not?), and is the lead female vocalist in ALT2K San Diego's Premier Alt Rock Cover Band. The Bella Lunas: Kismet brought The Bella Lunas together in San Diego, California in 2022 and the vibrant trio immediately bonded over their love of music, creativity and American Sign Language. Rhea, a versatile singer-songwriter and ASL Interpreter, showcases her powerful, raw musical talent and exceptional vocals. Sheena, a CODA (Child of a Deaf Adult), brings her velvety vocals and passion for perfectly blended harmonies. Lily, a Deaf artist, wowed the other ladies with her unique ASL rhythmic renditions of visual music. Rhea and Sheena's voices and instruments blend together in angelic harmonies, weaving intricate patterns of sound that captivate audiences. Yet it is Lily, a Deaf artist and performer, who introduces a completely new dimension with American Sign Language. They are graceful together with the music as it creates a mesmerizing experience you can see, hear, and feel. Espi Love: Espi Love is a local poet who residing on traditional Kumeyaay land (San Diego, CA). They're also a vocalist, actress, model, and competitive dancer, and crochet artist. Espi believes in art as a form of not only creative expression but protest, resistance, whimsy in a world that tells us to leave our playfulness behind. "Make a Joyful Noize (MAJN)" is a multimedia experience that blends music, film, and movement to capture the visceral and contagious energy of Black joy. Joy gives us a reason to live, even when it seems life has forsaken us. Black joy is entertainment, therapy, self-love, and salvation. It is the thing that allows us to still laugh and love. Soul Science Lab (SSL) is a music and multimedia duo powered by Chen Lo and Asante Amin. The two are storytellers who inspire the future with hip hop, jazz, soul and stunning visuals installations. The duo’s current projects include "Soundtrack ’63," "Make a Joyful Noize" (commissioned by Carnegie Hall), and "The Renaissance Mixtape" (commissioned by the Apollo Theater). SSL has released three studio albums: "Footprints," "The Visitor: Alter Destiny," and "Plan for Paradise." SSL has also developed a culturally responsive education platform for music creatives and educators at Soul Science University—just call them innovative Afro-futuristic griots. 2 - 3 p.m.: Interview with Andrew Beech in the theater 3:45 - 5 p.m.: Informal interaction with Andrew Beech in the "Doctor Who Worlds of Wonder" exhibit A founding member (in 1976) of the Doctor Who Appreciation Society (DWAS) - the show’s earliest fan club still running today, Andrew became its chairman in the 1980s and Events Organizer throughout the 1990s. Due to his unrivalled knowledge of the program since the very beginning, and his skill-set as a commercial lawyer, thereafter he has worked alongside the BBC, initially as a freelancer, to advise its commercial division (BBC Enterprises, later BBC Worldwide and latterly BBC Studios) on some of their "Doctor Who" business operations. His experiences over the last 35 years have included (1) providing Content, Production and Rights information and advice for multiple BBC departments on a myriad issues, (2) advising on the content, rights and marketing of the ‘classic’ "Doctor Who" DVD - and now Blu Ray - range, (3) supervising key elements of the public events (‘conventions’) held to celebrate the show’s 30th, 40th and 50th Anniversaries, (4) working within the BBC Studios Live Events team as Content Supervisor generally and, more specifically, as Curator/Artefacts Advisor for "The Doctor Who Experience" (2010-2017) and (5) liaising with the auction house tasked with the sale of "Doctor Who" props and costumes over the years. Los Angeles-based artist Shirley Tse (b.1968) works in sculpture, installation, photography, and text. She deconstructs our world of synthetic objects that carry paradoxical meanings and constructs different models in which differences might come together. Various strategies of visualising heterogeneity are used: conflating different scales, fusing the organic with the industrial, crossing between the literal and the metaphorical, merging different narratives, and collapsing the subject and object relationship. Tse received a Master of Fine Arts from ArtCenter College of Design, Pasadena and Bachelor of Arts degree from the Chinese University of Hong Kong Department of Fine Arts. Tse represented Hong Kong at the 58th Venice Biennale. Her work is featured in many articles, catalogues, and publications including "Akademie X: Lessons in Art + Life" (2015) and "Sculpture Today" (2007). Tse received the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship in 2009 and is on faculty at California Institute of the Arts since 2001 where she is Robert Fitzpatrick Chair in Art.
