Interview with Maria Hinojosa and Dean Nelson as part of the 2023 Writer's Symposium by the Sea, Writing That Celebrates. Maria Hinojosa has written three books: "Once I Was You: A Memoir of Love and Hate in a Torn America"; "Raising Raul: Adventures Raising Myself and My Son"; and "Crews: Gang Members Talk" with Maria Hinojosa. Hinojosa’s career includes reporting for PBS, CBS, WNBC, CNN, NPR, and anchoring the Emmy Award winning talk show from WGBH Maria Hinojosa: One-on-One. In 2022 she received a Pulitzer Prize for co-writing her podcast, Suave. As a reporter who was the first Latina in many newsrooms, Maria Hinojosa dreamt of a space where she could create independent, multimedia journalism that explores and gives a critical voice to the diverse American experience. To that end, in 2010, she created Futuro Media, an independent, nonprofit organization based in Harlem, NYC with the mission to create multimedia content for and about the new American mainstream in the service of empowering people to navigate the complexities of an increasingly diverse and connected world. Hinojosa is the Anchor and Executive Producer of the Peabody Award-winning show Latino USA, distributed by PRX, as well as Co-Host of the award-winning political podcast, In The Thick. She is also a contributor to the long-running, CBS Sunday Morning and a frequent guest on MSNBC. There are many hidden art treasures in Escondido to be found, and we will discover them All. The treasure hunt/scavenger hunt gives you clues to finding them. But just to be fair, we will all leave at the same time. You will be given your first clue Saturday evening at 4 P.M. online. Then the next one is at the next location. Upon finding and arriving, you will find the next clue, and so on. Each week we will discover hidden treasures about Escondido art and the artist that make it. Each hunt will take somewhere between 1 to 5 hours depending on you and your team. You may choose to find the clue, and then quickly move on to the next clue, or you may want to simply stay awhile and enjoy the art at that clue's location and then move on to the next one. You may opt to stay and enjoy the venue (Your 1st drink is on me and the theater tickets are paid for as well.) Teamwork is encouraged although not mandatory. The object is to have fun discovering Escondido’s hidden art treasures. You will receive the link to the first clue online, and after your spot is reserved. All the other clues will be found in one of the hidden treasures in Escondido. You can take part in as many hunts as you like. They all start Saturday evening at 4 P.M. online, where you will be given your first clue for the night. A donation will be made in your name after you pay for your entry to the Southern Sudanese Community Center of San Diego. Thank you for your participation. Good luck and have fun! Vanguard Culture presents the ENVZN23: Urban Art Takeover, a visual and performing arts festival that will transform numerous warehouses, industrial spaces, and other urban areas of the Commercial Street corridor in Logan Heights. Two full city blocks will be activated with multi-sensory art interventions by creatives from both sides of the U.S./Mexico border on Saturday, Sept. 2, 2023, from 5 p.m. - 10 p.m. Visitors will experience live dance, puppetry, and theatre performances on warehouse loading docks, a fashion show by Fashion Week San Diego in an industrial storage lot, art installations with curated soundscapes by Tijuana-based multimedia artist MALU, a short film festival inside a crossfit gym, delicious food and drink by local vendors, dance performances along the trolley line and much more. ENVZN23 will respond to the urban landscape by integrating curated sound and theatrical lighting design throughout.
