  • About this event The Suraj Israni Center for Cinematic Arts is pleased to invite you to the screening of Selections from San Diego Underground Film Festival on Saturday, November 5, 2022 at 6 p.m. at the Mosaic 113 Auditorium in the North Torrey Pines Living and Learning Neighborhood. About the Program San Diego Underground Film Festival (SDUFF) has quickly risen the ranks to become one of the nation's most challenging, nurturing, and down to earth film festivals. Known for taking risks on young talent alongside showcasing legendary filmmakers, SDUFF prides itself on being a festival by and for disciples of the moving image. Their curator, Ryan Betschart (class of 2009), has programmed a special selection of films from their upcoming 2022 festival. Location The Mosaic 113 Auditorium is located in the Suraj Israni Center for Cinematic Arts at UC San Diego (Mosaic Building).   • The SD Master Chorale proudly presents the world premiere of Marcos Balter's original Portuguese version of "Livro das Cores / Book of Colors," commissioned in celebration of the Chorale's 60th season. There will be a 4:00 p.m. pre-concert talk about this new a cappella creation by the up-and-coming Brazilian composer, who was on the faculty of UC San Diego before becoming the Fritz Reiner Professor of Musical Composition at Columbia University in New York City. Balter was honored in January as one of the Washington Post's "22 for '22: Composers and performers to watch this year." 50 voices from the SD Master Chorale, conducted by Dr. John K. Russell. Portions of this evening's program (by Brahms, Lauridsen, and others) will have piano accompaniment by Bryan Verhoye.   • Learn the ancient fiber craft of weaving your own fabric using a sustainably harvested wooden Rigid Heddle Loom and soft natural fibers. The mindful pace and beauty of watching your own fabric grow, row by row, is grounding, fascinating and very welcoming of your own creative eye and inspiration. At this hands-on workshop you’ll learn everything you need to know to warp and weave on your own. This class is perfect for anyone who’s been curious about weaving beyond a lap loom and wants to learn the warping and weaving processes. We’ll dive into fiber & fabric and demystify the process of getting set up (otherwise known as warping a loom), weaving, and finally, finishing and removing a woven fiber good from the loom! And, you’ll go home with handwoven fabric in-hand. Length of the final piece will depend on the individual’s own pace. In this workshop you’ll learn: * How a Rigid Heddle Loom works; * How to Plan a Textile (e.g. sett, basic pattern & choosing fiber, etc.) * How to Warp a Rigid Heddle; * How to Weave; * How to Remove your Woven; * And, How to Finish a freshly Handwoven Textile. Materials included. No experience necessary. Age 14+
