On November 9, 2025, San Diego will make history as the first major U.S. city to host Slow Fashion Day, a free community festival that transforms textile waste into wearable art while teaching practical sustainability skills. Please join us for a free, family-friendly festival that proves sustainable fashion can be fun, creative, and accessible to everyone. Co-Organizers Claudia Rodriguez-Biezunski (Sew Loka) and Chris Carson (The Homegrown Project) have curated an immersive experience that combines education, entertainment, and community engagement. - Transform your wardrobe while learning to sew and mend in hands-on workshops with all materials provided FREE, including t-shirt to tote bag stations using materials donated by Goodwill San Diego - Enjoy tacos and aguas frescas while listening to live music by all-female rock band Go Scarlet and DJ Beazie Beats, with coffee provided by 18 Cities Coffee - Hand stitch with friends inside the embroidery lounge while exploring textile art installations showcasing the scope of fashion's environmental impact - Learn from experts during the " Sustainability in Fashion" panel discussion featuring CalRecycle Chief Deputy Director Mindy McIntyre, moderated by Ramel J. The festival features free upcycling workshops where participants learn to sew, mend, and customize clothing using recycled materials. Step into a world of color, movement, and imagination with "El Alebrije," A Step Beyond’s vibrant reimagining of "The Nutcracker" through dance, theater, music, and puppetry — taking place November 7 & 8 at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido. This original production features over 150 youth performers (ages 8–18), a student-run technical crew, guest parent performers, and breathtaking storytelling and puppetry in collaboration with the San Diego Guild of Puppetry and Bocón Youth Arts. The story follows María, a young girl celebrating her Quinceañera, who receives a mystical Alebrije and is whisked into a magical dream journey across Mexico. Along the way, she encounters imagery inspired by Día de los Muertos, Frida Kahlo, and mariachi traditions—discovering the power of connection, heritage, and love. "El Alebrije" is more than a performance; it’s a community celebration. Last year’s production drew over 1,000 attendees across three shows, uniting families, volunteers, and artists in a dazzling display of creativity and collaboration. This new program, held on the first Wednesday of each month at 10:30 a.m., is designed to introduce children to the magic of storytelling while fostering an early love for music, art, and literature. Geared for ages 2–5, Creative Storytime is a free, interactive experience featuring songs and stories that celebrate creativity and imagination. After the program, families are invited to stay and explore the Athenaeum’s extraordinary children’s collection, a treasure trove of books on music and art. This collection highlights the library’s dedication to nurturing the next generation of readers and creators. About Ms. Katia Creative Storytime will be led by Katia Graham, a passionate librarian, storyteller, and advocate for literacy. Based in San Diego, Graham brings a wealth of experience and creativity to the Athenaeum. She is a member of the Freedom to Read Statement Taskforce for the Office for Intellectual Freedom of the American Library Association and has served as Youth Services Librarian at La Jolla/Riford Public Library and Children’s Librarian at Coronado Public Library. Graham is the founder of Librarian on the Go, an initiative dedicated to promoting literacy and information access. She has a master’s degree in library and information science from the University of Southern California, a second master’s in broadcast journalism from Columbia University, and a bachelor’s degree in English from Barnard College. A former reporter, Graham honed her storytelling skills in newsrooms, including KYMA, NY1 News, and ABC World News Tonight. In addition to her other programs, she proudly leads a bilingual storytime and developed San Diego Public Library's initiative to combat the Spanish disinformation crisis.
