“'The Space Between': Texture Studies by Denja Harris explores the tension between control and surrender, seeking meaning in the space between what is and what is becoming. Through large-scale yarn paintings, soft sculptures, and video, I investigate how texture, form, color, and pattern evoke sensory and emotional responses. Each piece invites viewers to engage with the interplay of softness and structure and to find significance within the undefined spaces. This work mirrors our collective human experience, an ongoing navigation of uncertainty, patience, and becoming. In this way, absence holds as much weight as presence. This exhibition is about approaching the unknown with curiosity rather than resistance and using improvisation as both an initiation and a response. EC Gallery will share a compelling selection of artworks from The Art of Dr. Seuss Collection in the Gaslamp at 621 5th Avenue, San Diego on May 10 through June 13 for FREE. Visitors may explore and acquire works from Dr. Seuss’s best-known children’s books, as well as The Secret Art of Dr. Seuss, a mind-expanding collection based on decades of artwork, which Dr. Seuss created at night for his own personal pleasure. Perhaps the wackiest and most wonderful elements of the collection are Dr. Seuss’s three-dimensional “Unorthodox Taxidermy” sculptures with names such as Carbonic Walrus, Two-Horned Drouberhannis, and Goo-Goo-Eyed Tasmanian Wolghast, to name a few. For over 60 years, Dr. Seuss’s illustrations have brought a visual realization to his fantastic and imaginary worlds. His artistic talent went far beyond the printed page and yet, to this day, his Secret Art Collection is virtually unknown to the general public. Throughout his lifetime, Theodor Seuss Geisel (aka Dr. Seuss) created paintings and sculpture, which he secreted away at the Dr. Seuss Estate in La Jolla, CA. Each of these Estate-Authorized limited editions has been adapted and reproduced from Theodor Seuss Geisel’s original drawings, paintings, or sculptures. Additionally, each work bears a posthumously printed or engraved Dr. Seuss signature, identifying the work as an authorized limited edition commissioned by the Dr. Seuss Estate. This period was pivotal in the evolution of his art practice from a photorealistic water media-based practice to large scale expressionistic, symbolist works in impasto oil paint, imbuing ominous, apocalyptic and other-worldly scenes of imaginary landscapes, reflecting a tumultuous time of his own personal growth and change. Collins’ work perfectly displays the idea that the body is the temple of the spirit, the being as a whole doesn’t deny but embraces and develops the unseen aspects of existence.
