To Honor Mental Health Week 2025, Oceanside International Film Festival invites the artistic communities of Oceanside & Beyond to attend "THE ROAD BACK': A Mental Health Film Series for the Mind, Body & Soul. This Special Film Showcase In-Partnership with the Oceanside Theatre Company Celebrates the Vital Role of the Arts in the Healing Process, Mental Well-Being and the Resilience of the Soul. As well as the importance of having a Community Base in doing so. This 80 Minute Showcase is to be followed by a Q&A Panel Discussion and features the following short films: "ALONE TOGETHER" - After breaking off their budding relationship, Julian and Devon struggle to return to their lonely lives apart. With a unique storytelling device, the audience is able to view two characters' stories at once. This experimental, hand-drawn and collage, 2-D animation explores the power of memory as manifested through objects from our past. Directed by Peter Murphy | Rochester, NY | Animation | 10 Minutes "WILD SEA" - "Wild Sea" delves into the life of Jeff Allen, a trailblazing figure in the world of Sea Kayaking. The film traces Jeff's journey from his formative years to his role as one of the foremost Sea Kayak guides and coaches of our time. As we accompany Jeff on his odyssey, we are immersed in the depths of his past, including his experiences in the military and are granted access to his own personal traumas. The film illuminates the transformative power of the sea as Jeff finds purpose and healing through his connection with the ocean. In particular, his 2004 Japan circumnavigation serves as a poignant testament to the cathartic influence of the ocean environment on his life. With a deep love for the ocean instilled by his late father, Curtis aims to inspire lifelong passions in his own children and pass down a legacy of stoke. Directed by Danny Hardesty | Auburn, MA | Documentary | 4 Minutes "RESURRECTION ARTIST" - If you died and came back, what would your art look like? Matthew, a doctor and artist drowns during a bodysurfing accident, 10 minutes later he is resuscitated by strangers but is paralyzed from the neck down. After surgery and rehabilitation, he walks out of the hospital. Once home, he must navigate a return to life with a changed body. Matthew explores the significance of his harrowing death experience through creating art, mounts a comeback to his work as an ER doctor, and sets an audacious goal to surf within a year of his death experience. Directed by Scott Fitzloff | San Francisco, CA | Documentary | 22 Minutes "LAST CALL" - "Last Call" tells the story of Kate (Lindsay Duncan), a desperate mother who is trying to reconnect with her son(Tom Holland). Navigating an obvious void, Kate will finally have the chance to ask the questions that have haunted her past and will decide her future. Painting using imagery in art is a fun way to tell a visual story. We use black and white photocopies of ancestors (found or real) as the underlying source to paint. This is a way of creating expressiveness with a subject built in. This way of art making can stand up to any art form found in galleries. In this workshop, learn how to incorporate painted photocopies in your work. Also, learn how to properly adhere paper seamlessly (to a canvas or board) without causing bubbles or creases. Students walk away with several paintings and a good understanding of this fun process. Materials: The $40 fee paid to the instructor at first class includes images, mediums, varnish, and 8" x 10" canvases and use of brushes, palette knife, markers, burnishing tool, gloves, paints. Not provided: aprons, palette paper, paper towels and water cans. Feel free to bring your own brushes, paints, palette paper, or any of the above-listed supplies. You may bring your own black and white images to fit 8" x 10" canvases or email jpegs of your images to Lisa to prepare. Images need to be sent to Lisa (lisabebi@gmail.com) by June 14. If you prefer to work with larger than 8" x 10", you must send your selected jpgs to Lisa two weeks prior to the workshop (by June 3) so she can send them out for processing. Email her immediately to let her know your plan and the size of your image(s). There may be an added cost. For those working in a larger format, they must bring their own proper-sized canvas. Working with a life model, students will learn to identify and depict the core “gesture” of any pose. Emphasis is on short poses with the goal of increasing our ability to capture the body in motion. By focusing on the “verb” of the pose, and not the “noun,” we will explore the storytelling potential of the figure. This is an excellent class for those interested in animation and the entertainment arts or for anyone looking to inject more dynamism into their life-drawing practice. T3 Triple Threat’s Summer 2025 camp participants will rehearse and perform MTI’s Broadway Junior Revue “Raise Your Voice”. T3 partners with the City of San Diego and the North Park Recreation Center, providing training in dance, voice, and acting to produce well-rounded performers. Our Summer 2025 camp is a 7-week theatrical production culminating in a multi-performance run of “Raise Your Voice”. Art includes works from emerging artists in the North County, including 13 recent mixed media paintings by Laurie Batter of Carlsbad. Fresh, delicious appetizers by Savory Moment will be served. Batter, one of the featured artists, says she was always creating art as a child and teenager. She had good fortune to be born into a family who encouraged her creativity, and a grade school program that exposed her to the Masters and a college degree in Art History. After a 40-year hiatus from art while she ran her boutique PR & Marketing firm, and the surprise blessing of the Pandemic, she has renewed her connection to art, creating through multiple mediums and subjects. Her home studio is chock full of colorful paints, and every art supply you could dream about. She actively explores her creativity through classes at Mira Costa College, plus several renowned workshops including Nicholas Wilton’s Art2Life Creative Visioning Program (CVP), Art2Life Spark, and Jenny Nelson. Laurie is a member of AGNC (Artist Group of North County) and the Oceanside Museum of Art Artist Alliance. Her work is focused mostly on small stories about humanity that touch the human soul.
