Mary Mattingly is an interdisciplinary artist who cares deeply about water and believes in the power of public art. Mattingly founded "Swale", an edible landscape on a public barge in New York City. Recent public art projects include "Limnal Lacrimosa" in Glacier National Park in Montana; "Public Water" with +More Art in New York; "Vanishing Point" with Metal Southend and "Focal Point Gallery" in the UK. Mattingly has exhibited sculpture and photography at the Cuenca, Istanbul, and Havana Biennials; Storm King Art Center in New York; the International Center of Photography in New York; the Seoul Art Center; the Brooklyn Museum in New York; and the Palais de Tokyo in Paris. She has received grants from the James L. Knight Foundation, the Harpo Foundation, the Jerome Foundation, and the Art Matters Foundation, among others. Her work has been featured in Aperture, Art in America, Sculpture, The New York Times, Le Monde, and on Art21, and included in such publications as Nature – part of the Whitechapel/MIT Press Documents of Contemporary Art series– and Henry Sayre’s A World of Art (8th edition), published by Pearson Education, Inc. In 2022, a monograph of her work, What Happens After, was published by the Anchorage Museum and Hirmer Verlag. Co-sponsored by the Nature, Space and Politics working group of the UCSD International Institute, this lecture is introduced and moderated by Dr. Pinar Yoldas, an infradisciplinary designer/artist/researcher and Associate Professor and head of the Speculative Design Area in the Department of Visual Arts. Explore ceramic handbuilding & funky glazes! Mondays, June 9, 16, 23, 30, July 14 From 6 p.m. - 8:30 p.m., with the last class of the series from 6 p.m. - 9 p.m. In this 5-week series, students will learn the basics of handbuilding to create functional pieces with an emphasis on decorative techniques. Working with mid fire clay, we will explore various methods of building forms and decorative techniques with underglazes, slips, glaze, and various experimental materials. Students will complete multiple projects throughout the course with an artistic and creative approach to decorative designs. Inspired by printmaking, painting and drawing, we will explore image transfers, mark making, layering, stencils, and more! Through the use of technique and materials, students will explore the fusion of 2D art and 3D form. Students will be able to utilize a wide array of glazes and colors through the course. The instructor will have a wide array of custom decorative materials for use and sale. All materials provided. Additional materials available via the instructor for a fee. Explore natural dye color! Sunday, June 1, 9:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. In this 2-hour workshop, explore eco-bundle dye, the art of infusing natural pigments onto fibers. Join fiber artist Jeanine Ertl and share in the ephemeral, mindful and magical beauty of this serendipitous dye process. You will learn about the gentle, fleeting nature of a diverse array of botanical and kitchen dyes while completing the process from start to finish—mordanting bundling, steaming and finishing. Each student will create two unique silk or cotton squares or scarves. Colors will shift and change before your eyes as you place natural dyestuffs, steam, unroll, and enjoy! And while bundles steam, we will talk about exploring the potential dyes in our homes, gardens and local area. Students are welcome to bring in their favorite flowers to explore using in your bundle. Each participant will leave with a booklet on the Eco-Bundle Dye process and two bundle dyed pieces. Ages 12+ years welcome, or 8+ years with an adult. If adult and child would like to make their own pieces, please purchase two spaces.
