  • Guitar slung low, microphone turned up, and emotion overflowing, Joe Samba taps into rock ‘n’ roll spirit and reggae soul all at once. The Massachusetts-born singer, songwriter, and guitarist sonically teeters on an axis of island-inflected grooves and gritty guitar-craft balanced by his dynamic vocals. He finds the sweet spot between smoked-out Caribbean bliss and sweat-soaked punkified energy. It’s why he’s quietly emerged as a phenomenon, toppling charts at #1 and performing alongside everyone from The Dirty Heads to Pepper. Joe Samba on Facebook / Instagram

  • Very Pride is crossing coasts for the first time ever — and we’re landing loud. From the streets of Chicago to the coast of California, we’re bringing queer joy, deep grooves, and the magic of chosen family to Wicked West SD. Friday, July 18 Wicked West SD 6 p.m. – 1:30 a.m. This isn’t your average Pride party. This is house music heaven, queer excellence, and full-on summer energy rolled into one unforgettable night. Lineup: DERRICK CARTER One of the founding fathers of Chicago house, Derrick needs no introduction—but we’ll give him one anyway. His sets are legendary: funky, fearless, and filled with pure soul. From underground basements to international stages, he keeps dancefloors locked in the groove and lifted by joy. This is a rare West Coast appearance — don’t miss it. KARSTEN SOLLORS Commanding, hypnotic, and undeniably sexy. Karsten’s sound is equal parts underground heat and refined energy — a slow build to euphoria with every set. He knows how to move a room and create space for bodies to release, connect, and transcend. ALEXIS TUCCI A walking disco ball and high priestess of funk. Alexis blends classic house, deep grooves, and glitter-drenched energy in a way that feels like a spiritual release. Expect to twirl, sweat, and maybe cry. If liberation had a soundtrack, she’d be spinning it. NIC JERICHO Moody, percussive, and intensely emotional. Nic curates soundscapes that feel cinematic—pulling you into a darker, richer frequency of house. Think basement rave meets art film. Deep feels, no filler. Hosted by: Khloe Couleé · Miss Toto · Brenna Jordan · Matt Palmer · Chichi Fuera · Maddy Mokes · Stephen Clarke Come early, stay late, and bring your look. • Wednesdays, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. July 30 – Aug. 20 (4 weeks, 12 total hours of instruction) La Jolla Studio This course is for the beginner abstract painter or a refresher for the seasoned artist. This class is designed for you to tap into your intuition and discover your own style through embracing the process. While practicing the principles of abstract acrylic painting, we will work to find a balance between using these techniques and learning to trust our intuition. The focus will be on process, as we learn together how to start, loosen up, take risks, trust our gut, lean into our emotions, and let go of perfection in our paintings. Along with the foundations of color, composition, and line/shape, we will practice intuitive mark making and layering and allowing each of these to inform what comes next on the canvas. As your artistic voice unfolds, your own unique visual language will appear. Materials: Variety of brushes; any tools, palette knives, wedges, color shapers you have (not necessary, but helpful); acrylic paint in various colors (your favorites but also Titanium White and Raw Umber); palette or palette paper; small canvas (no smaller than 12” x 12”) and any size larger canvas. Note: If you're a beginner, bring a basic starter set of paints or even craft paints. No need to go out and purchase a bunch of expensive paints! A medium-bodied paint is best, but using a variety of fluid medium and heavy-bodied paints will give your work more interest. That said, if you have any mediums for changing viscosity of paint, that works too! Max students: 12 Visit Athenaeum Music & Arts Library on Facebook / Instagram
