Saturdays, April 12, 19, 26, May 3 & 17, 10 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. In this 5-week wheel-throwing course, ceramicist Briena Chavez guides students looking to build a solid foundation in ceramics while progressively developing their skills. This class is perfect for beginners and those who want to refine their techniques through a guided approach. Throughout the course, students will learn fundamental throwing techniques, trimming, altering forms, and glazing, gaining confidence on the wheel while creating functional pottery. Each week introduces a new skill that builds on the previous one. Course Breakdown: Week 1: Throwing cylinders and bowls – mastering form and structure. Week 2: Trimming and attachments – refining shapes, “Why do we trim?” and adding handles (coil method). Week 3: Throwing bud vases and altering forms into garden planters or wall planters. Week 4: Trimming vases using chucks – learning support techniques for delicate forms. Week 5: Break Week Week 6: Glazing fundamentals for brush on – differences in glaze (celadons, mattes, etc.), layering techniques, wax resistant, and firing considerations. Students gain hands-on experience with throwing and understanding of clay behavior from start to finish, as well as confidence in being on the wheel and a deeper knowledge of glaze choices and surface treatments. Bach Collegium San Diego Presents Knock out Sounds with Reginald Mobley The Return of Bach to Bop Bach Collegium San Diego (BCSD), one of the country’s leading baroque ensembles, is performing with countertenor d'Amore Reginald Mobley who showcases the thin lines between the worlds of baroque and jazz. The repertoire, from J.S. Bach and Purcell to Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald, explores the world of improvisation, ornamentation, pulsating bass lines, and most importantly, groove. “When exploring the world of Baroque music and where it intersects with jazz, who better to lead the way than one of the great countertenors of this generation, Reginald Mobley,” said BCSD Musical Director Ruben Valenzuela. “We're incredibly fortunate to have him back with BCSD after the success of Bach to Bop from a few years ago. Get ready...from Purcell and Bach to Sarah Vaughan and Duke Ellington!" BCSD partnered with local schools to develop an education curriculum surrounding this program and the similarities and differences (and historical timeline of the genres) of baroque and jazz music. The pilot program is in development but BCSD is planning on having the students perform a piece or two on the concert program as a culmination of this special program. Bach Collegium San Diego engages audiences with accessible, historically informed performances and educational programs featuring repertoire from the Renaissance, Baroque, and early Classical eras. St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center will host its 46th Annual Haute with Heart Fashion Show, with the theme “Couture,” paying homage to one of the fashion capitals of the world, Paris. Inspired by a piece from artist and SMSC student Mark Rimland, guests will be taking a day trip to the City of Love. Attendees will be greeted by live Parisian inspired music, fabulous boutique shopping, a silent auction, and free flowing champagne. Once the ballroom doors open, all messieurs and madames will enjoy a delicious Parisian inspired luncheon, special up-lifting performances by SMSC students, live auction, and a one-of-a-kind fashion show produced by the talented Kristi Brooks, who has worked with top designers and styled celebrities around the globe. SMSC is a nonprofit organization that serves individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. All funds raised will benefit the organization's nationally recognized innovative programs, where they combine the culture of care and creativity within quality programs to provide liberal arts education, practical skills development, employment, and dignity for a lifetime. SMSC allows students to develop creative outlets, learn marketable skills, and gain a sense of independence and self-esteem. Over 400 students attend SMSC, ranging from recent high school graduates to seniors in their eighties. An array of K-12 student performance groups from across the Vista Unified School District (VUSD) will illuminate the Vista Village Winterfest and tree lighting celebration this Sunday, December 8 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. in front of the Vista Cinépolis Cinemas (25 Main St, 92083). The nine VUSD performance groups will perform choir, a string ensemble, Ballet Folklorico, ukuleles, steel drums, and more. “I am thrilled we have such a wide variety of ages from elementary through high school who want to perform at the Vista Village Winterfest. It is important that our students have opportunities to showcase their art in the community,” said Susan Stuber, VUSD Visual and Performing Arts Department Resource Teacher, who worked with the district’s performing arts directors to organize the Vista Village Winterfest music and dance showcase. Stuber added, “For those who attend the event, their heart will be filled with joy as they hear the sweet sounds of steel drums, choirs, instrumental ensembles, and ukuleles; as well as watch a variety of dance performances. There will even be an opportunity for everyone to sing a few carols during the actual tree lighting ceremony.” Alongside the diversity of performances, families are invited to enjoy a Christmas film at the Cinépolis Cinemas and play movie trivia to win Santa-themed prizes or shop at the makers market and craft fair organized by the VUSD Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) featuring arts and crafts, games, and gifts to purchase.
