Born in San Jose, California in 1955, Tommy Castro first picked up a guitar at age 10. He fell under the spell of six-string stars like Elvin Bishop, Taj Mahal and Mike Bloomfield. Almost every major rock and soul act, from Ike and Tina Turner to Janis Joplin to Tower Of Power, toured through the area, and Castro was at every show. He saw John Lee Hooker, Albert King, and Buddy Guy and Junior Wells at a local club, JJ’s Blues Bar. Castro often jammed at JJ’s, dreaming of busting out and making a name for himself. He created his own personal sound and style by mixing the blues, R&B and funk music he loved into his own, instantly recognizable brand of uplifting, soul-healing music. As his reputation spread, Tommy played in several Bay Area bands, quickly making a name for himself as a hotter-than-hot live artist bursting at the seams with talent. In 1985, he became lead singer and guitarist for the regionally popular blues band NiteCry before joined popular Warner Brothers’ artists The Dynatones, gigging all over the country. He formed the first Tommy Castro Band in 1992 and has not stopped touring since. In 1995, soon after releasing their first album on Blind Pig Records, The Tommy Castro Band were selected as the house band for three seasons on NBC Television’s Comedy Showcase (airing right after Saturday Night Live). The show brought Tommy in front of millions of viewers every week and cemented his reputation as a not-to-be-missed live performer. After a series of successful releases on the Blind Pig, Telarc and 33rd Street labels, Tommy Castro joined Alligator Records in 2009. His label debut, Hard Believer, launched to massive popular and critical acclaim. 2011 saw the release of the raucous Tommy Castro Presents "The Legendary Rhythm & Blues Revue—Live!." In 2014, Castro & The Painkillers released "The Devil You Know," followed by "Method To My Madnes"s in 2015, "Stompin’ Ground" in 2017, and the irresistible "Killin’ It"—Live in 2019. With 2021’s "A Bluesman Came To Town," Castro told the story of a young musician’s journey through the blues world. AllMusic said the album was “a towering achievement.” Castro received his fourth prestigious and coveted Blues Music Award for B.B. King Entertainer Of The Year in 2023. He’s taken home a total of 10 Blues Music Awards and is among the genre’s most decorated artists. Castro’s relentless road-dog approach—gig after gig, 150 nights a year—continues to earn him loyal, lifelong fans everywhere he plays. The Washington Post says Castro is “phenomenal and funky” with “soulful vocals and inspired blues guitar.” Famed guitarist Joe Bonamassa says, “Tommy has always been top of the heap among blues guitar players. Pre-registration required. About the program: The San Diego World Affairs Council is co-sponsoring the in-person and Zoom presentations by acclaimed author and columnist Peter Beinart. Beinart will discuss his new book, “Being Jewish After the Destruction of Gaza,” with SDSU Professors Jonathan Graubart and Manal Swairjo. The book confronts the dominant “pro-Israel” narrative, which features a recurring Jewish experience of persecution and victimhood that endures even amid Israel’s destruction of Gaza. That narrative, Beinart argues, both warps our understanding of Israel-Palestine and erases the richness of the Jewish experience. He imagines an alternate narrative of what it means to be a Jew and how to reckon with injustices perpetrated in the name of the Jewish people. In this future, Israeli Jews have the right to equality, not supremacy, while Jewish and Palestinian safety and dignity are co-dependent, not mutually exclusive. As Adam Hochschild writes, “At this painful moment, Peter Beinart’s voice is more vital than ever. His reach is broad—from the tragedy of today’s Middle East to the South Africa he knows well to events centuries ago—his scholarship is deep, and his heart is big. Peter Alexander Beinart was (born February 28, 1971). His parents were Jewish immigrants from South Africa (his maternal grandfather was from Russia, and his maternal grandmother, who was Sephardic, was from Egypt). His father's parents were from Lithuania. Jonathan Graubart is a professor and chair of the SDSU Political Science Department. He is the author of Jewish Self-Determination beyond Zionism: Lessons from Hannah Arendt and other Pariahs (Temple University Press 2023). Graubart is a co-founder of Hinenu Havurah, a progressive Jewish collective in San Diego. Manal Swairjo is a professor of biochemistry at SDSU. Her research focuses on RNA biogenesis processes and their links to human disease. Dr Swairjo was born in Gaza, Palestine. Much of her family in Gaza was killed by Israel’s destructive assault. In San Diego, she co-founded a Jewish-Palestinian dialogue in 2000 after the collapse of Oslo and the outbreak of the second Intifada.

The 15th annual "Wood A Furniture Show" exhibition at the Escondido Arts Partnership featuring contemporary and traditionally handcrafted fine wood furniture by Southern California woodworkers. This exhibition will feature a gathering of some of the very best furniture makers in Southern California. Handcrafted furniture will be exhibited in a variety of wood mediums and techniques, including innovative contemporary, traditional and whimsical art furniture, as well as detailed veneering and marquetry works. This two-month exhibition runs Jan. 11- Feb. 21, 2025. Exhibitions are always free and open to the public. Wednesdays, 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. January 8–March 5 (9 weeks, 27 total hours of instruction) AAC Art Studio In this class we will sculpt a full figure from the life model. Students will have eight weeks to build an armature, learn basic figure proportions and structure, and sculpt an entire figure from head to toe. Emphasis will be placed on understanding the skeleton and basic anatomy, and how to depict the illusion of weight. Regular instructor demonstrations and discussions of technique will be given.
