  • Books Thru Bars is an extension of Groundwork Books; a leftist, non-hierarchical, non-profit, workers’ cooperative located at UCSD. We are 100% volunteer run, community based collective that has been sending books and resources to people incarcerated for years. Books Thru Bars strives to make literacy more accessible, as without access to the internet, books are one of the only places to turn for incarcerated people who wish to learn, imagine, study or grow. We respect readers’ journeys by selecting items in line with their interests, whether that be educational or recreational. • Join us to get outside, immerse yourself in nature, and make a positive impact for the San Diego River! Join a community of like-minded volunteers working to restore the San Diego River Estuary - a highly sensitive habitat that is home to several endangered species. By removing invasive plants, you’ll directly support the return of native pollinators and wildlife, prevent erosion, improve water quality, and protect endangered species, like the California Least Tern. Together, we will create a healthier, more accessible natural space for the entire community to enjoy. This is a huge effort and a great opportunity for those looking to try out field work, connect with fellow nature lovers, make a meaningful difference for a critical and fragile ecosystem, and explore the beautiful estuary habitat! We’d love to see you there! RSVP Here: https://sandiegoriver.galaxydigital.com/need/detail/?need_id=1087643 What to Expect: Many of these invasive plant species are small annuals that require hand pulling, so be prepared to get dirty. All necessary tools will be provided, but feel free to bring your own gloves or safety glasses if preferred. Who Would Be Perfect for the Team: We welcome individuals from all walks of life! Retired folks can use their time and experience to contribute to the environment, while students seeking hands-on experience in habitat restoration can gain valuable knowledge and skills. Families are also encouraged to participate, as our activities are a great way to bond and instill a sense of stewardship for the natural world in children. If you are passionate about making a difference and want to help restore the San Diego River, you would be an ideal fit for our team. Please note: The meeting location is NEAR the address listed. We will meet at the small grassy area between the main parking lot, the San Diego River Bikeway, and Ocean Villa Inn. Here are a few tips to help you prepare for the event: Attire: Long Pants and closed-toe shoes are required Items to Bring: Reusable water bottle, hat, other forms of sun protection, snacks Weather: Light rain will not cancel the event For safety reasons, no pets are allowed at this event There are restroom facilities at this location No experience necessary!
