Pacific Arts Movement presents the 24th Annual San Diego Asian Film Festival from Nov. 2 - 11, 2023, the largest showcase of Asian and Asian American cinema in North America. As a delightful addition to this year's festival, Pac Arts presents "CHEW THE SCENE," San Diego's premier Asian American food event, which will take place on November 10 at the newly renovated Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego in La Jolla. This culinary extravaganza will feature tastings from over a dozen of San Diego's top AAPI chefs, restaurants, and vendors, all showcasing their unique takes on Asian American cuisine. The event will follow the San Diego Asian Film Festival's awards presentation, where we will be honoring the festival's top films. The culinary celebration immediately follows the San Diego Asian Film Festival's filmmaker awards. An independent jury selects winners in categories like Narrative Feature, Documentary Feature, and more. The George C. Lin Emerging Filmmaker Award is given to a first-time feature filmmaker who embodies the spirit of George C. Lin, former Program Director of the San Diego Asian Film Festival who passed away in 2008. Additional awards at the festival include the Digital Pioneer Award, Lifetime Achievement Award, and Audience Award for new feature films. These honors celebrate excellence in filmmaking and pay tribute to influential figures in the industry. Pac Art’s keystone educational program, Reel Voices is a high school documentary filmmaking initiative that focuses on empowering young filmmakers to tell their stories. Back for its seventh year, the popular Expressions in the Abstract exhibit at the Borrego Art Institute opens Nov. 4 in the main gallery. This exciting show features abstract art in a variety of mediums including art created from discarded and found artifacts. Located in Borrego Springs, this exhibit will include the work of new and returning regional artists. In the north gallery, The Golden Land: The Abstract Art of Kristen Guest explores Southern California scenery through composition, textures, shapes, subtlety of colors and rhythms of light and dark. Guest, an award-winning artist and art instructor in San Diego, translates beauty and atmospheric feeling into work that results in dramatic shapes, gestural lines and visual tension. Painting Winter, from Bruegel to Monet Join us this holiday season to look closely at scenes of winter from art history. We'll discuss paintings associated with the Little Ice Age--with a focus on the Dutch artist Hendrick Avercamp (1585-1634), a specialist in painting activities on ice. We'll also walk through Pieter Bruegel's series showing months of the year, particularly his celebrated 'Hunters in the Snow', in praise of the winter season. About Weili Jin Weili Jin has been passionate about the history of art ever since first seeing Botticelli in the second grade. Ten years later, he continues to specialize in the paintings of Renaissance Florence, particularly the patronage of the Medici. Most recently, he has worked to develop the YouTube channel “Narrative Art History,” a lecture series that contextualizes Renaissance art in a continuous, chronological narrative.
